Čanj Anchorage Guide
Also known as: Canj, Uvala Čanj, Canj Beach
Čanj is a sandy beach resort on the south Montenegro coast — one of the closest beach villages to Bar, and popular with Montenegrin summer visitors. The anchorage in 3–6m on sand provides good holding in settled conditions, with a lively beach bar scene ashore in summer. The bay is exposed to S and SW — overnight stays require a confirmed settled forecast. A good day stop on passage between Bar and Ulcinj, with the option to go ashore for a meal and a swim. Montenegro cruising permit mandatory. Always check current permit requirements.

Sandy beach bay in 3–6m on sand with good holding. Exposed to S, SW, and W — settled weather only for overnight. Čanj is a popular summer beach resort with a sandy beach, beach bars, and seasonal facilities. Crowded in July–August with summer tourists. The sand holding is reliable when properly set. Approach from the N, anchoring in the centre of the bay clear of any swimming buoys or roped-off beach areas.
Setting Your Anchor
The bottom at Čanj is primarily sand with reliable holding when properly set.
- Approach slowly and check your depth sounder. At 3–6m, deploy minimum 7:1 scope (42m chain at 6m depth).
- Drop into the wind and pay out chain steadily as the boat drifts back.
- Set firmly in reverse — 30–60 seconds at moderate throttle. The chain should tighten without the boat moving backwards.
- Set the anchor alarm immediately after setting — on the south Montenegro coast, SW swell can build quickly and conditions can deteriorate faster than forecasts suggest. Use the scope calculator to confirm adequate chain length.
Recommended anchor types: Rocna, Mantus, Delta. See our guide to anchor types by bottom.

A note on this guide: Data has been researched from multiple sailing sources and is provided in good faith. Conditions — depth, holding, regulations — can change. Always check forecasts, NAVTEX, and current official charts before visiting. Use a GPS anchor alarm and never rely solely on a guide for navigational decisions.
Sleep peacefully at Čanj
Safety Anchor Alarm monitors your GPS position continuously and sounds a loud alarm the moment your boat drifts — essential on the south Montenegro coast where SW swell can build quickly on exposed anchorages and departures must be made at the first sign of change.
