Setting Your Anchor
- Check tidal height for your arrival time — many Groningen Wad anchorages dry at LW

- Daylight navigation only in all Wadden and Ems channels — no exceptions
- Set your anchor alarm immediately after anchoring — the tide will drop while you sleep
About This Anchorage
Lauwersoog is the most important sailing base in the northeastern Netherlands — the gateway to Schiermonnikoog, the eastern Wadden islands, and the Groningen coast. The harbour was purpose-built as a Wadden sailing centre after the Lauwersmeer polder was created (1969). The Robbengatsluis lock separates the Wadden Sea from the Lauwersmeer, a large inland lake that is now a National Park. The ferry to Schiermonnikoog (the car-free UNESCO Wadden island) departs from Lauwersoog — sailing yachts use the outer Wadden harbour. The Lauwersmeer behind the lock is excellent cruising territory: 22 km² of non-tidal freshwater with reed beds, nature reserves, and several small marinas accessible by lock from Lauwersoog.

Hazards

- !Ferry traffic: Schiermonnikoog ferry uses the outer harbour approaches — keep clear of ferry berth and route
- !Tidal range 2–2.5m in outer (Wadden) harbour — plan depth for LW
- !Nature reserve restrictions in Lauwersmeer — anchoring in reed bed areas prohibited; check Staatsbosbeheer guidance
Skipper's Tips
- →Lauwersoog is the best base for visiting Schiermonnikoog (9nm) — leave on the flood tide at HW -3 to arrive at the island at HW
- →The Lauwersmeer (behind the lock) is excellent sailing for a day or two — non-tidal, scenic, quiet; grey seals haul out on the banks
- →The harbourmaster speaks English and provides comprehensive Wadden guidance — ask for the current Waddengids and channel update
- →VHF Ch 31 (Lauwersoog Robbengatsluis) — call before approaching to confirm lock schedule
- →Grey seals are regularly visible from the outer harbour — Lauwersoog is in one of the seal habitats of the Wadden UNESCO area
