Recommended Anchor Alarm Radius
55m
55m for 2–3m depth on sand/mud. Öland limestone shelf extends from shore — set alarm generously and verify no shoal water within swing radius. In westerly conditions (across the 20km sound from the mainland), the anchorage can be uncomfortable. Use the marina berth in unsettled conditions.
About This Anchorage
Borgholm is Öland's largest town — the island's commercial and cultural centre, dominated by the dramatic ruined walls of Borgholm Castle (Borgholms slott), which burned down in 1806 and stands as one of Sweden's most spectacular castle ruins. The royal family's summer residence (Solliden Palace) is just south of town, and the grounds open to visitors in summer. Borgholm has a lively summer atmosphere — outdoor cafes, a waterfront market, art galleries, and the annual Borgholm Music Festival. The town marina is busy in summer; the anchorage approach is the alternative for free-swinging boats. The limestone karst landscape of Öland is unique in Sweden — flat, windswept, and unlike anything on the mainland.
