About This Anchorage
The Durankulak area represents the extreme northern edge of Bulgarian Black Sea sailing — just kilometres from the Romanian frontier. The coast here is remote and undeveloped, backed by the Durankulak Lake, a major coastal lagoon and Ramsar wetland site protecting breeding colonies of rare waterbirds. The archaeological significance of Durankulak is extraordinary: the lakeside island settlement (occupied from 5500 BC) has yielded some of the oldest gold artefacts ever found in the world — predating even the famous Varna Gold by several centuries. The bay approach provides access to this exceptional cultural landscape, though facilities are essentially non-existent. This is wilderness sailing at its most authentic on the Black Sea.
