Governor's Beach Anchorage Guide

Also known as: Governors Beach, Akrotiri east anchorage, Παραλία του Κυβερνήτη

Governor's Beach offers the most photogenic anchorage on Cyprus's south coast — dramatic white chalk-limestone cliffs tumbling into deep blue water, with multiple small coves to choose from in 3–6m over sand and pebble. Protected from the north and west; exposed to S and SE. Select the cove best sheltered for the current conditions. Good holding in sandy pockets between the pebble. A seasonal beach taverna is popular with expats and British military from the Akrotiri area. 12nm east of Limassol Marina — a good lunch or overnight stop on a coastal passage. Avoid in any southerly forecast.

The Anchorage

A series of small coves cut into dramatic white chalk-limestone cliffs east of Limassol, in 3–6m over a mix of sand and pebble. Good holding in the sandy pockets; the pebble areas can cause skipping if scope is insufficient — increase scope and set with power in pebble sections. Protected from N, NW, W, and NE; exposed to S and SE. Anchor in the cove that best suits the current conditions — select the most sheltered pocket for the wind direction. The contrast of white rock, deep blue water, and limestone formations makes this the most visually dramatic anchorage on the south coast. A beach taverna operates in season and is popular with British military personnel from the nearby Akrotiri SBA — walk up from the beach or dinghy landing. 80m alarm radius accounts for open S/SE exposure and limited space in the smaller coves. Tidal range negligible.

Setting Your Anchor

The bottom at Governor's Beach is primarily sand and pebble with reliable holding when properly set.

  1. Check for Posidonia seagrass before dropping the anchor — snorkel or use a waterproof camera to verify a sand patch. Posidonia is EU-protected; fines apply.
  2. Anchor in 36m. Cyprus tidal range is negligible (<30cm). Wind-driven sea level variation up to 0.5m possible in strong onshore conditions.
  3. Deploy at least 5:1 scope (30m chain at 6m depth). Set firmly in reverse — 30–60 seconds at moderate throttle.
  4. Use the scope calculator to confirm adequate chain.

Recommended anchor types: Rocna, Mantus, Spade.

Overnight Anchoring & Anchor Alarm

Overnight stays at Governor's Beach are best in settled conditions — the anchorage is exposed to S and SE winds. The primary overnight consideration on the south coast is the daily westerly sea breeze and the risk of southerly (Lodos) swell — vacate immediately at any S/SE forecast.

Set your GPS anchor alarm to 80m radius before going below. 80m radius in 4–5m sand/pebble. Good holding in sand; pebble sections may require extra scope and a powered set. S/SE exposure — untenable in southerlies. Multiple coves: pick the most sheltered for conditions.

Best April–October in settled northerly or westerly conditions. May and June are particularly good — warm water, low crowds, and the limestone cliffs in sharp spring light. July–August sees more visitors and the beach taverna is busy. The coves are relatively sheltered from the afternoon westerly compared to more exposed south-coast bays, making them comfortable through the afternoon if you are well tucked into a northern-facing pocket. Avoid entirely in any S or SE wind forecast.

Navigation Hazards

  • S and SE exposure — fully exposed to southerly swell; leave immediately if any southerly is forecast
  • Pebble bottom in some coves — anchor can skip; increase scope to 5:1 minimum and set with engine reverse
  • Posidonia present in deeper water around the headlands — anchor in confirmed sand/pebble patches only
  • Summer afternoon westerly sea breeze 15–20kt builds after noon — can make landing by dinghy uncomfortable in the afternoon

Rules & Regulations

  • EU member (not Schengen): No customs for EU boats from EU ports. Non-EU boats: Limassol Marina is a port of entry (check hours); Larnaca Marina is the preferred 24/7 entry. Fly yellow Q flag. EES biometric for non-EU crew since October 2025.
  • Anchoring fee: Free
  • Restrictions: Avoid in S or SE wind — fully exposed to southerly swell; conditions deteriorate rapidly. Pebble sections: increase scope and set anchor with engine power. Posidonia may be present — anchor in confirmed sand patches only. Limited space in smaller coves — select your cove carefully.

Skipper's Tips

  1. Scout the coves on entry and choose the one offering best protection for the current wind direction
  2. White limestone cliffs — best light for photography in the morning and early evening
  3. Seasonal beach taverna accessible by dinghy landing — arrive early for a table in peak season
  4. Popular with expats from the British base — English menus and friendly atmosphere ashore
  5. 12nm east of Limassol — good halfway stop on a coastal passage towards Larnaca

A note on this guide: Data has been researched from multiple sailing sources and is provided in good faith. Conditions — depth, holding, regulations — can change. Always check forecasts and current official charts before visiting. Use a GPS anchor alarm and never rely solely on a guide for navigational decisions.

Safety Anchor Alarm monitors your GPS position continuously — essential on the south coast where daily westerly builds quickly and proximity to Akrotiri SBA requires precise GPS tracking.
