Recommended Anchor Alarm Radius

55m

55m for this well-sheltered fjord anchorage in 2–5m excellent mud. The fjord provides near-complete shelter — the boat will barely swing. Reduce to 40m in calm conditions. Eelgrass along the shore edges is the main hazard — stay in the central channel.

Setting Your Anchor

  1. 1.Check eelgrass chart (DKSOS app or Navionics) — anchor only on sandy or muddy bottom free of vegetation
  2. 2.Use 5:1 scope minimum — the Little Belt is almost tideless (0.3–0.5m tidal range); scope is about depth and holding, not tide
  3. 3.Remember: anchoring is tolerated for 1 night only in unoccupied natural anchorages — it is not a legal right in Denmark
  4. 4.Set your anchor alarm to 55m before sleeping — tidal currents through the narrows can cause unexpected swinging

About This Anchorage

Haderslev Fjord is one of Denmark's most sheltered natural anchorages — a long, narrow fjord reaching 25km inland from the Little Belt to the city of Haderslev. The fjord is deep enough for most cruising yachts (2–5m throughout the main channel) and the mud holding is excellent. The surrounding wooded hills completely enclose the fjord, eliminating virtually all wind fetch. Haderslev is the regional capital of South Jutland, with a magnificent Gothic cathedral (Haderslev Domkirke, 13th century), good provisioning, and a charming old town. The fjord is famous among Danish sailors as the best storm refuge in the Little Belt system.

Skipper's Tips

  • Haderslev Fjord is arguably the best storm anchorage in the Little Belt — if a gale is coming from any direction, sail into the fjord and rest easy
  • Haderslev Domkirke (cathedral) is one of the finest Gothic churches in Denmark — the interior is remarkable for its medieval proportions
  • The Haderslev Museum covers South Jutland history including the German occupation period (1864–1920) — a fascinating and often overlooked chapter of Danish history
  • The fjord is excellent for kayaking — calm water, wooded shores, and occasional kingfisher sightings
