About This Anchorage

Waya Island is the first significant island in the Yasawa Group — a dramatically beautiful island with steep volcanic ridges rising to 500m, traditional villages, and excellent anchorages. It is approximately 25nm north of Musket Cove, making it the natural first overnight stop on the Yasawa Islands cruise. Waya has several villages — Nalova, Kese, and Yalobi — all requiring sevusevu protocol before arriving. The village communities are welcoming and the island offers excellent hiking on the ridge trails with outstanding views across the Mamanuca Group. The surrounding reef and clear water provide good snorkelling. Waya is far less developed than the Mamanucas — no resort infrastructure, authentic Fijian village life, minimal facilities. The passage from Mana Island (20nm S) to Waya crosses open water — depart early to arrive in good afternoon light.

  • !Reef on the approach — navigate carefully with chart; approach in good light only
  • !Sevusevu mandatory — carry kava root bought at Nadi or Lautoka market
  • !No facilities — 25nm from Musket Cove; carry full provisions and fuel

Skipper's Tips

  • Waya's volcanic ridge hike (3–4 hours return) offers one of the best views in all of Fiji — ask the chief's permission before setting out
  • The passage from Mana Island to Waya (20nm) is the first significant open-water leg — depart by 06:00 to arrive comfortably
  • Sevusevu at Yalobi village is the most important first step — the chief will assign you a guide if you perform it correctly
  • Waya is one of the most photographically stunning islands in Fiji — the ridgeline against blue water is extraordinary
  • Snorkelling off the reef on the south side of the island is excellent — relatively undisturbed coral gardens

Set Your Anchor Alarm to 80m

In Fiji's coral-rich waters, anchor drag toward a bommie can hole your boat and damage the reef. Safety Anchor Alarm monitors your GPS continuously so you can enjoy the islands with confidence.
