Recommended Anchor Alarm Radius

80m

80m for good holding in sand/mud in 3–6m. North coast exposure means northerly conditions create a difficult anchorage — best used in settled southerly or SW conditions. In any northerly above F3, seek shelter in the inner sounds south of the Åland mainland.

About This Anchorage

Geta is a small municipality on the north coast of the Åland mainland — the wilder, less visited counterpart to the busier south coast. The north coast of Åland faces the more open waters of the northern Baltic and has a more dramatic granite landscape than the sheltered inner sounds. The Geta nature reserve includes the highest point on Åland (Orrdalsklint, 129m) — modest by mainland standards but commanding 360° views over the entire archipelago. The anchorage on the north coast gives access to this wild terrain and an authentic glimpse of the less-touristic Åland. Very few visiting yachts come to the Geta north coast — the attraction is the solitude and the contrast with the crowded main circuit.

  • !Red granite rocks on north coast — approach carefully; north coast charted less thoroughly than main routes
  • !No facilities — completely self-sufficient
  • !Bird sanctuary restrictions Apr 1 – Jul 15 on coastal areas
  • !More remote than the main circuit — weather changes faster on the north coast

Skipper's Tips

  • Geta's Orrdalsklint (129m) is the highest point on Åland — the walk from the coast takes 45 minutes and the view encompasses the entire archipelago from both seas
  • The north coast is genuinely wilder than the main Åland route — the granite cliffs and open water give a different scale to the archipelago
  • Best visited after Jul 15 when bird sanctuary restrictions lift — the coastal birdlife on the north coast is exceptional
  • Anchor here only in settled southerly conditions — the northerly exposure means any wind shift requires quick departure
  • The contrast between the empty north coast and busy Mariehamn (22nm south) is remarkable — this is the 'other Åland' that most tourists never see
