About This Anchorage

Haapasaari (Swedish: Aspö) is one of the most remarkable and remote sailing destinations in Finnish waters — the outermost permanently inhabited island in the eastern Gulf of Finland, approximately 15nm from the Russian border. The small fishing village has been continuously inhabited since the 16th century, sustained by fishing and later by the lighthouse station. The island retains an extraordinary authenticity: traditional wooden fishing huts, boathouses along the granite shore, and a small permanent community. The outer Gulf position means the anchorage faces significant exposure from the east — the direction of Russia and the prevailing swell in easterly conditions. The island's remoteness and frontier character make it one of the most memorable stops on the Finnish Gulf coast.

Skipper's Tips

  • Haapasaari is one of Finland's most authentically remote sailing stops — plan an extended stay in settled conditions
  • The lighthouse is operational and the keeper's station has historical exhibits (summer)
  • Fishing around the outer rocks is exceptional in this area — sea trout and perch; Finnish licence required
  • Monitor weather forecast obsessively — easterly conditions make the anchorage untenable and the return passage difficult
  • The frontier atmosphere — knowing Russia is 15nm east — gives this island a unique character
