About This Anchorage

Pyhtää (Swedish: Pyttis) sits at the mouth of the Kymi river — one of Finland's largest rivers — where it splits into multiple channels through the estuary archipelago before entering the Gulf of Finland. The combination of river current, tidal influence (minimal but present as wind-driven seiches), and the maze of islands creates a complex but beautiful sailing environment. The medieval grey stone church of Pyhtää, dating from the 15th century, stands on a ridge above the archipelago — one of the most visible landmarks on the eastern Gulf coast. The area is a wildlife haven — the estuary islands host breeding seabirds and the Kymi river is one of Finland's best salmon rivers upstream.
