About This Anchorage
Hanko is Finland's southernmost town and one of the most significant sailing hubs on the entire Baltic coast. Situated at the tip of the Hanko Peninsula where the Gulf of Finland meets the Baltic proper, it has been a strategic port for centuries — a major export port in the 19th century, a key battle site in the Winter War (1939–40), and today a vibrant summer sailing town with one of Finland's largest guest harbours. The south harbour hosts hundreds of visiting yachts in July–August. For offshore sailors, Hanko is the last provisioning and fuel stop before the 80nm crossing to Tallinn, the 200nm run to Stockholm, or the passage south into the Baltic. The town itself has an extraordinary 19th century wooden villa architecture — a UNESCO tentative list site — with colourful summer villas built by wealthy St Petersburg families who visited by yacht.

Skipper's Tips
- →Hanko's 19th century wooden villa district is one of Finland's finest — rent a bike and explore the peninsula roads
- →The Hanko Regatta (late June) is one of Finland's biggest sailing events — the harbour overflows; book ahead
- →For the Tallinn crossing (80nm), Hanko is the ideal departure — leave on a stable high-pressure day; SE wind is favourable
- →The Hanko fish market at the harbour (summer mornings) sells fresh Baltic herring and perch direct from local boats
