About This Anchorage
Kerimäki is home to the world's largest wooden church — a monumental neo-Gothic structure built in 1848 that can seat 3,000 people and accommodate 5,000 standing. The church was built to serve the large rural parish population at a time when the region was densely populated; today the church seats far more people than the current permanent population of Kerimäki municipality. The building's scale is staggering — the dome rises 27m above the floor, the twin towers 37m. Arriving by boat across Lake Saimaa and seeing the church rise above the waterline is one of the most memorable approaches in Finnish inland cruising. The anchorage in the adjacent bay is peaceful and well-positioned for a visit.

Skipper's Tips
- →The world's largest wooden church viewed from the water is extraordinary — approach slowly from 3nm out to appreciate the full scale rising above the lake
- →The church interior is equally remarkable — the pine wood construction, the organ, and the sheer scale of the nave; tours run Jun–Aug
- →Kerimäki is a quick day-stop from Savonlinna (15nm, 2.5 hours) — combine with the Olavinlinna castle visit for a full Saimaa cultural day
- →The lake water around the church bay is clean and warm in July (22°C+) — excellent freshwater swimming
- →The approach to Kerimäki from the south gives the best view of the church rising above the lake — time arrival for morning light
