Anchorages in Hamburg & Elbe River
Tidal River — No Anchoring in Shipping Lanes
The Elbe is tidal throughout — 2–3m range at Hamburg, 3.66m at Cuxhaven. Strong ebb currents 3–4kt. Hamburg is the world's 3rd busiest port; 400–500 vessels/day transit the Elbe. Anchoring in the Fahrwasser (main channel) is strictly prohibited. Monitor VHF Ch 73 (Elbe Traffic) mandatory when underway. The Kiel Canal (NOK) connects the Elbe to the Baltic at Brunsbüttel — the world's busiest artificial waterway. Large ship wash is significant throughout the river.
