About This Anchorage
Schaprode on the northwest coast of Rügen is the main departure point for Hiddensee — the car-free island that lies just offshore. The Schaproder Bodden (shallow lagoon) surrounds the harbour with flat, sheltered water ideal for shallow-draught craft. The village is small (400 inhabitants) with a traditional North German character. The ferry to Hiddensee departs several times daily from Schaprode in summer — making this a good base for visiting the car-free island by dinghy or ferry while the yacht remains anchored. The Bodden lagoon system of northwest Rügen is part of the Nationalpark Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft — outstanding birdwatching throughout.

Skipper's Tips
- →Hiddensee is accessible by dinghy from Schaprode in calm conditions (3nm) — take the ferry instead in any wind above F3; the Bodden can be choppy in small boats
- →The Bodden birdwatching from the anchorage is extraordinary — Crane (Kranich) migration in September/October passes through in flocks of thousands; Heron, Spoonbill, and Marsh Harrier nest in the reeds
- →The Nationalpark visitor centre at Vitte (Hiddensee, accessible by ferry) has excellent information on the Bodden ecosystem and the nature protection rules
- →Schaprode is a quiet base for exploring the western Rügen Bodden by tender — the flat, shallow water of the lagoon is ideal for dinghy exploration in calm conditions
- →Combine with Vitte/Hiddensee (day trip by ferry) and Stralsund (22nm, day's sail): the three-stop western Rügen circuit
Facilities
Small restaurant in Schaprode village. Ferry kiosk at the harbour. Nearest full facilities: Stralsund (22nm).

Best Months & Season
May, June, July, August, September
May–September. The Bodden is too exposed in autumn/winter NW gales — the shallow water creates nasty chop. Best in the summer months with settled SW/SE winds.
