Agios Georgios Bay (North Corfu) Anchorage Guide

Also known as: Άγιος Γεώργιος Βορείου, Agios Georgios Pagon

Agios Georgios Bay on the NW coast of Corfu (not to be confused with Agios Georgios on the SW coast) is a wide, sweeping sandy bay with excellent holding. The bay is flanked by low-lying coastal land with olive trees and the typical Corfu green hillside. In settled summer conditions it is a pleasant overnight anchorage with beautiful clear water and long sandy beaches. The small resort village of Agios Georgios Pagon sits at the N end of the bay. The afternoon Maestro creates chop in the open bay — early afternoon arrivals will find the bay pleasant, while by 15:00–16:00 it can be lively. A quiet and underutilised anchorage compared to the better-known spots.

The Anchorage

Wide, open sandy bay in 4–8m. Excellent holding in clean sand. Protected from N through E through S. Open to NW and W — the afternoon Maestro can create chop and some swell. In calm summer mornings the bay is flat and very beautiful. Better for overnight if you tuck toward the S end of the bay.

Setting Your Anchor

The bottom at Agios Georgios Bay (North Corfu) is primarily sand with reliable holding when properly set. Use the following approach:

  1. Approach slowly and check your depth sounder on the way in. At 48m, deploy at minimum 7:1 scope (56m chain at 8m depth).
  2. Drop into the wind or current and pay out chain steadily as the boat drifts back — do not allow chain to pile on the anchor.
  3. Set firmly in reverse. Apply moderate throttle astern for 30–60 seconds. The chain should tighten without the boat moving backwards.
  4. Take a GPS bearing. Note your position once set and compare to the scope calculator to confirm you have adequate chain for the depth.

Recommended anchor types for this bottom: Rocna, Delta, Mantus. See our guide to anchor types by bottom for detailed comparisons.

Skipper's Tips

  1. A quiet alternative to the more crowded NW Corfu bays. Good for a relaxed afternoon swim in the morning calm.
  2. Anchor toward the S/SE end of the bay for best shelter from the afternoon NW.
  3. Check the forecast — overnight is comfortable only in settled NW weather.

A note on this guide: The data in this guide has been researched from multiple sailing sources and is provided in good faith. Anchorage conditions — including depth, holding, and local regulations — can change. Before visiting, always check current weather forecasts, NAVTEX and VHF weather bulletins, and consult your up-to-date charts.
