Greece — Cyclades

Best Anchorages in the Cyclades

The Cyclades are the heart of Greek island sailing — iconic, dramatic, and demanding. The meltemi blows hard in July and August. Sail in May–June or September for the same crystal water with manageable winds. These 10 anchorages have been verified for depth, meltemi shelter, holding, and anchor alarm radius.

About Cyclades Sailing

The Meltemi

The meltemi is a dry, clear N/NW wind that dominates the Cyclades from June to September — F4–6 on most afternoons, F7–8+ in July and August over the open central Aegean. It builds from 09:00–11:00 and eases at sunset. Sail between 06:00–09:00 for calm passages. Anchor by noon.

North vs South

The southern islands — Sifnos, Milos, Folegandros, Serifos — receive deflected, lighter meltemi than the northern Cyclades. Hill topography on Sifnos and Milos creates genuine all-weather anchorages like Vathi and Provatas that are unavailable further north. Syros, Paros, and Mykonos face the full northern Aegean meltemi fetch.

Posidonia Protection

Posidonia oceanica seagrass meadows are widespread across the Cyclades seabed. Anchoring on Posidonia is prohibited under EU law and enforced with substantial fines. Always seek sandy patches; snorkel to verify the bottom before setting the anchor alarm and going below.

Best Timing

May–June and September are the ideal Cyclades sailing window: reliable F3–4 meltemi (manageable sailing), water temperature 23–25°C, and a fraction of the July–August crowd. Popular bays fill by 12:00 in July–August — in peak season, plan to be at anchor before noon.

Meltemi Alert — Cyclades

The meltemi can build from flat calm to 30+ knots within 2–3 hours on summer afternoons. In July–August over the open central Aegean between the islands it regularly reaches F6–8. Always run a GPS anchor alarm overnight — an anchorage that feels calm at anchor set can see significant gusts and wind-driven swell by dawn, especially on the northern islands. The recommended alarm radii in these guides account for expected meltemi swing and scope.

Kleftiko (Milos) — Mandatory Safety Zone

By Greek Government Gazette No. 6499 (vol. B', 15.11.2023), all vessels are temporarily prohibited from approaching within 25m of the Kleftiko cave entrances and cliff faces due to active rockfall and landslide risk. Anchoring in the bay is still permitted — maintain a minimum 25m clearance from all rock faces. The caves can be visited by dinghy, observing the exclusion zone.

Greek Anchoring Rules — Cyclades

Anchoring in the Cyclades is generally free in most bays. Key requirements:

  • !DEKPA (Transit Log): Required for all yachts over 7m. ~€30. Obtain at first port of entry: Piraeus, Lavrio, Syros, Paros Town (Parikia), or Milos (Adamas).
  • !TEPAI Cruising Tax: ~€8/m per month for yachts 7–12m. Pay online at e-tepai.gr before arrival. Keep the receipt on board.
  • !Posidonia seagrass: Anchoring on Posidonia meadows is prohibited (Greek Law 3937/2011 and EU Habitats Directive). Widespread in the Cyclades — snorkel to verify bottom type before setting your alarm.
  • !Kleftiko exclusion zone: 25m mandatory clearance from cave entrances and cliff faces (Gov. Gazette 6499, Nov 2023) — active rockfall risk.

For full details, see our overnight anchoring rules by region guide.

Monitor Your Anchor Overnight

Safety Anchor Alarm watches your GPS position continuously and sounds an instant alert if your boat drifts outside your set radius — so you can sleep through the Cyclades night, even when the meltemi peaks at midnight.
