The Anchorage

Kalogria is a clean sandy bay on the SW coast of Sithonia with superb holding in fine sand. Well-protected from the prevailing NE summer winds. The beach is one of the best in Halkidiki. Open to SW through NW — these are less common in summer but watch the forecast.

Setting Your Anchor

The bottom at Kalogria is primarily sand with reliable holding when properly set. Use the following approach:

  1. Approach slowly and check your depth sounder on the way in. At 38m, deploy at minimum 7:1 scope (56m chain at 8m depth).
  2. Drop into the wind or current and pay out chain steadily as the boat drifts back — do not allow chain to pile on the anchor.
  3. Set firmly in reverse. Apply moderate throttle astern for 30–60 seconds. The chain should tighten without the boat moving backwards.
  4. Take a GPS bearing. Note your position once set and compare to the scope calculator to confirm you have adequate chain for the depth.

Recommended anchor types for this bottom: Delta, Rocna, Fortress, Spade. See our guide to anchor types by bottom for detailed comparisons.

Overnight Anchoring & Anchor Alarm

Overnight stays at Kalogria are feasible but require monitoring. The anchorage is exposed to SW and W and NW winds.

Set your GPS anchor alarm to 45m radius before going below for the night.45m radius is appropriate for the main sandy bay. Excellent holding on clean sand means you can sleep soundly when winds are from the NE. If SW or W winds develop, the anchorage becomes exposed — have a plan to move to Porto Koufo (8nm S) or Neos Marmaras (8nm N).

Kalogria is a popular beach anchorage — busy on summer weekends with day boats from Neos Marmaras and Porto Carras resort, but less crowded than Vourvourou. The beach is superb for swimming and snorkelling on the N end.

Navigation Hazards

  • Open to SW through NW — check forecast before overnight stay
  • Day-boat and jet-ski traffic on weekends in July–August

Skipper's Tips

  1. The N end of the beach has the clearest water and best snorkelling

  3. Good overnight anchorage when winds are NE — one of the best sandy bays in Sithonia

A note on this guide: The data in this guide has been researched from multiple sailing sources and is provided in good faith. Anchorage conditions — including depth, holding, and local regulations — can change. Before visiting, always check current weather forecasts, NAVTEX and VHF weather bulletins, and consult your up-to-date charts.
