Nydri Anchorage Guide

Also known as: Nidri, Νυδρί, Vlicho Bay area

Nydri is the heart of Ionian charter sailing — the biggest charter base in Greece, with six or more charter company pontoons, constant boat traffic, and a busy working waterfront. As an anchorage it is functional rather than beautiful. The town itself is vibrant with a strip of restaurants, bars, and chandleries. The real gem nearby is Vlicho Bay (Desimi sector) — a near-lagoon with outstanding mud holding and all-round shelter, popular with experienced cruisers who want to avoid the main Nydri circus. The channel E of Nydri looking across to Meganisi island is scenic. The afternoon Maistro funnels between the islands creating a moderate chop in the main channel. The charter pontoons handle hundreds of yachts every week — berthing infrastructure here is the best in the Ionian.

Recommended Anchor Alarm Radius

60m in the Vlicho Bay/Desimi area in 4–10m excellent mud. This is the most secure anchoring in the Nydri area. For the town quay zone, 45m. For Tranquil Bay, 65m but monitor for dragging in crowded conditions. The charter boat density in this area means collision risk in a dragging incident — set the alarm conservatively.

Nydri town quay (anchor and stern-to): 45m recommended — Nydri town quay has room for 20–30 yachts stern-to in 2.

Tranquil Bay / Liaditis Bay anchorage: 65m recommended — Liaditis (Tranquil) Bay half a mile E of Nydri — coordinates approx 38°42.

Vlicho Bay (Desimi area) anchorage: 60m recommended — Best anchorage in the Nydri area.

Anchoring Zones

Nydri has 3 distinct anchoring zones, each with different depth, holding, and exposure characteristics. Choose the zone that matches your boat size and the expected overnight conditions.

Zone 1: Nydri town quay (anchor and stern-to)

  • Depth: 24m
  • Bottom: mud, weed
  • Holding: Good holding
  • Protected from: N, NE, S, SW, NW
  • Exposed to: E, SE
  • Recommended alarm radius: 45m

Nydri town quay has room for 20–30 yachts stern-to in 2.5–3m. Holding good in mud/weed — use plenty of chain. Affected by E and SE winds over F5. Charter company pontoons dominate the bay (6+ pontoons, some with laid moorings). Keep well clear of the quay to allow for wash from passing tripper boats.

Zone 2: Tranquil Bay / Liaditis Bay anchorage

  • Depth: 212m
  • Bottom: mud, weed
  • Holding: Good holding
  • Protected from: N, NE, NW, W
  • Exposed to: E, SE, S
  • Recommended alarm radius: 65m

Liaditis (Tranquil) Bay half a mile E of Nydri — coordinates approx 38°42.1'N 20°42.8'E. Depths 2m close inshore to 12m in the fairway. S end of the cove has shoals — anchor centre or N side. Good mud holding; use maximum scope. Despite the name, this bay is usually overcrowded in July–August.

Zone 3: Vlicho Bay (Desimi area) anchorage

  • Depth: 410m
  • Bottom: mud
  • Holding: Excellent holding
  • Protected from: N, NE, E, SE, S, SW, NW
  • Recommended alarm radius: 60m

Best anchorage in the Nydri area. Desimi on the outer side of Vlicho Bay — anchor in 4–10m on excellent mud. Nearly all-round shelter. Quieter than Nydri town; preferred by experienced cruisers. The lagoon-like bay provides the best holding in the area.

Setting Your Anchor

The bottom at Nydri is primarily mud with reliable holding when properly set. Use the following approach:

  1. Approach slowly and check your depth sounder on the way in. At 410m, deploy at minimum 7:1 scope (70m chain at 10m depth).
  2. Drop into the wind or current and pay out chain steadily as the boat drifts back — do not allow chain to pile on the anchor.
  3. Set firmly in reverse. Apply moderate throttle astern for 30–60 seconds. The chain should tighten without the boat moving backwards.
  4. Take a GPS bearing. Note your position once set and compare to the scope calculator to confirm you have adequate chain for the depth.

Recommended anchor types for this bottom: CQR, Delta, Bruce, Rocna. See our guide to anchor types by bottom for detailed comparisons.

Overnight Anchoring & Anchor Alarm

Overnight stays at Nydri are excellent — 360-degree protection means minimal boat movement.

Set your GPS anchor alarm to 60m radius before going below for the night.60m in the Vlicho Bay/Desimi area in 4–10m excellent mud. This is the most secure anchoring in the Nydri area. For the town quay zone, 45m. For Tranquil Bay, 65m but monitor for dragging in crowded conditions. The charter boat density in this area means collision risk in a dragging incident — set the alarm conservatively.

Active as a base year-round but the anchorage is really only comfortable May–October. Peak July–August is intense with charter traffic. May, June and September are the recommended visiting months. April and October are quieter and prices drop significantly.

Navigation Hazards

  • Extremely busy in July–August — charter boat traffic creates constant wash; anchor and quay berths need constant monitoring
  • Tripper boats operate early morning to late evening and create significant wash
  • E and SE winds (over F5) make the town quay uncomfortable
  • Tranquil Bay has shoals at the S end — anchor centre or N, watch the depth sounder
  • Six or more charter company pontoons reduce free anchorage space — plan for anchoring in Vlicho/Desimi instead

Rules & Regulations

  • Permit: Not required beyond standard Greek DEKPA transit log
  • Anchoring fee: Free for anchoring; charter pontoons charge daily rates
  • Restrictions: Charter company pontoons are private — do not berth without permission. Tripper boat route through the bay — maintain clear lanes.

  • Provisions: Available

Skipper's Tips

  1. Skip the Nydri town quay circus and head straight for Desimi (Vlicho Bay) — anchor in excellent mud, better shelter, and a fraction of the boat density.
  2. Nydri is where you provision and provision only — the waterfront shops have everything from chandlery to supermarkets. Stock up and move on.
  3. The Meganisi island anchorages (Port Spilia, Vathi Meganisi) are a 2 nm sail from Nydri and far more peaceful — perfect for a night away from the charter base.

A note on this guide: The data in this guide has been researched from multiple sailing sources and is provided in good faith. Anchorage conditions — including depth, holding, and local regulations — can change. Before visiting, always check current weather forecasts, NAVTEX and VHF weather bulletins, and consult your up-to-date charts. Use a GPS anchor alarm and never rely solely on a guide for navigational decisions.
