Vlikho Bay Anchorage Guide
Also known as: Βλυχό, Vlikho, Port Vlikho
Vlikho Bay is widely regarded as one of the finest anchorages in the entire Ionian — a completely landlocked inner bay 3 nm south of Nydri, offering 360-degree protection in deep mud with excellent holding. The narrow entrance (approx. 100m wide) leads into a spacious inner basin where yachts can swing freely or take a stern line ashore. The bay is sheltered from every direction — it is used as a long-term base by liveaboard sailors and as a hurricane hole in severe weather. A small boat yard and some pontoons line the shores. The setting is serene — olive-covered hills surrounding a mirror-calm lagoon. An essential overnight stop for anyone cruising the Lefkada region.

Completely enclosed land-locked inner bay. Mud bottom throughout — excellent holding. 4–8m in the anchoring area. The bay entrance is narrow (~100m wide) but straightforward. Once inside, 360-degree shelter from all winds. An ideal hurricane hole and long-term base.
Setting Your Anchor
The bottom at Vlikho Bay is primarily mud with reliable holding when properly set. Use the following approach:
- Approach slowly and check your depth sounder on the way in. At 4–8m, deploy at minimum 7:1 scope (56m chain at 8m depth).
- Drop into the wind or current and pay out chain steadily as the boat drifts back — do not allow chain to pile on the anchor.
- Set firmly in reverse. Apply moderate throttle astern for 30–60 seconds. The chain should tighten without the boat moving backwards.
- Take a GPS bearing. Note your position once set and compare to the scope calculator to confirm you have adequate chain for the depth.
Recommended anchor types for this bottom: Rocna, Delta, CQR, Mantus. See our guide to anchor types by bottom for detailed comparisons.

Year-round use by long-term sailors. Excellent in every season. July–August sees more yachts but the bay rarely fills beyond comfortable capacity.
Navigation Hazards
- Narrow entrance — proceed slowly and maintain watch for outbound vessels
- Shoaling at the head of the bay — stay in the 4m+ area

A note on this guide: The data in this guide has been researched from multiple sailing sources and is provided in good faith. Anchorage conditions — including depth, holding, and local regulations — can change. Before visiting, always check current weather forecasts, NAVTEX and VHF weather bulletins, and consult your up-to-date charts. Use a GPS anchor alarm and never rely solely on a guide for navigational decisions.
