Koroni Anchorage Guide
Also known as: ÎοÏÏνη, Corone, Ormos Koroni
Koroni is the counterpart to Methoni — the 'two eyes of Venice', twin Venetian fortresses that guard the entrance to the Messenian Gulf on opposite shores. The castle at Koroni is among the most romantic in Greece, rising dramatically above the fishing village, crowned by a Venetian fortress with a convent inside. The anchorage is west of the castle headland, on sand and weed. The setting — castle above, whitewashed houses cascading down the hill, clear blue water — is quintessentially Greek. The bay is open to the west and NW, which brings an afternoon sea breeze; the inner harbour gives more shelter. A superb lunch stop and overnight anchorage in settled weather.

Recommended Anchor Alarm Radius
85m for the main anchorage with sand/weed bottom and W/NW exposure. The afternoon NW sea breeze in the Messenian Gulf (F3â4) creates short chop from the W — ensure anchor is set before the afternoon thermal develops. In the inner harbour, 40m is sufficient. The wide W/NW exposure means Koroni is a daytime or settled-weather overnight anchorage; not a bolt-hole anchorage for strong W conditions.
Main bay anchorage (W of castle headland): 85m recommended — Anchor in 4â8m W of the castle headland on sand with patches of weed.
Inner fishing harbour (stern-to): 40m recommended — Small inner harbour with limited space for yachts stern-to.
Anchoring Zones
Koroni has 2 distinct anchoring zones, each with different depth, holding, and exposure characteristics.
Zone 1: Main bay anchorage (W of castle headland)
- Depth: 4–10m
- Bottom: sand, weed
- Holding: Good Holding
- Protected from: N, NE, E, SE
- Exposed to: S, SW, W, NW
- Recommended alarm radius: 85m
Anchor in 4â8m W of the castle headland on sand with patches of weed. The Venetian castle on the headland provides deflection from N and NE. Good holding on sandy patches; snorkel to confirm anchor has penetrated any weed to sand. Bay is open to the W and NW — in strong NW winds, the anchorage becomes choppy and holding can be tested. Prevailing summer NW (local Messenian Gulf sea breeze) can be F3â4 in the afternoons. Space for 10â15 yachts in settled conditions.
Zone 2: Inner fishing harbour (stern-to)
- Depth: 2–3.5m
- Bottom: sand, mud
- Holding: Good Holding
- Protected from: N, NE, E, SE, S
- Exposed to: W, NW
- Recommended alarm radius: 40m
Small inner harbour with limited space for yachts stern-to. Depths 2â3.5m at the quay. Better shelter from S than the open anchorage. Limited to 4â6 yachts; fishing boats have priority. Check depths carefully at the entrance (can be <2m at LW on the bar). Water available at the quay. Better overnight option in W/NW afternoon thermal conditions.
Setting Your Anchor
The bottom at Koroni is primarily sand and weed with reliable holding when properly set.
- Approach slowly and check your depth sounder on the way in. At 4–10m, deploy at minimum 7:1 scope (70m chain at 10m depth).
- Drop into the wind or current and pay out chain steadily as the boat drifts back.
- Set firmly in reverse. Apply moderate throttle astern for 30–60 seconds.
- Take a GPS bearing. Note your position once set and compare to the scope calculator.
Recommended anchor types for this bottom: Rocna, Mantus, Spade, Delta.
Overnight Anchoring & Anchor Alarm
Overnight stays at Koroni are feasible but require monitoring. The anchorage is exposed to S and SW and W and NW winds.
Set your GPS anchor alarm to 85m radius before going below for the night.
MayâSeptember is the season. The Messenian Gulf is generally sheltered from the worst Ionian gales by the mountains to the west, but W swell can penetrate. The afternoon NW thermal is a reliable feature JuneâAugust. October sees declining conditions; the bay is not recommended for off-season use. September is outstanding — warm, clear, and uncrowded.
Navigation Hazards
- W/NW afternoon sea breeze (Messenian Gulf thermal) builds F3â4 from early afternoon, creating chop in the main anchorage; inner harbour offers more protection
- Sand/weed bottom: anchor may skate on weed; snorkel to confirm penetration into sand beneath; test holding under power before going ashore
- Harbour entrance bar: can shoal to <2m; sound carefully before entering the inner harbour, especially for deeper draft boats
- Open to SW and W: any S or W system makes the anchorage unsafe; depart for Kalamata or Pylos in westerly conditions
- Limited fuel: none available at Koroni — nearest at Kalamata (22nm) or Pylos (25nm)
Rules & Regulations
- Permit: Not required beyond standard Greek DEKPA transit log
- Anchoring fee: Free
- Restrictions: DEKPA and TEPAI required. Fishing harbour: fishing boats have priority; yachts stern-to by arrangement with the port authority. Check depths at the harbour entrance (bar may be <2m). Posidonia weed patches in anchorage — verify anchor on sand.

Skipper's Tips
- One of the most beautiful anchorages in the Messenian Gulf — the castle and village combination is outstanding; do not miss the climb up to the Venetian fortress
- Arrive before midday to avoid the afternoon NW thermal and secure the best position close to the headland for maximum shelter
- The inner harbour offers better overnight shelter in NW thermal conditions; ask the harbour master about available space
- Good lunch stop on the MethoniâKalamata passage; the waterfront tavernas are excellent value and authentically local
A note on this guide: The data in this guide has been researched from multiple sailing sources and is provided in good faith. Anchorage conditions can change. Always check current weather forecasts, NAVTEX and VHF weather bulletins, and consult your up-to-date charts. Use a GPS anchor alarm and never rely solely on a guide for navigational decisions.
