Zogeria Bay Anchorage Guide
Also known as: ÎÏγεÏία ΣÏεÏÏÏν, Ormos Zogeria, Zogheria
Zogeria is widely regarded as the most beautiful anchorage on Spetses — a sweeping bay fringed by fragrant pine trees that run almost to the waterline, with turquoise water over a sandy-weed bottom. The surrounding forest is protected, giving the bay an unspoilt character rare so close to Athens (90km). An idyllic overnight stop and popular swimming destination. The NEâSE facing aspect provides good shelter from the prevailing summer NE sea breeze. The holding on sand is reliable once the anchor is through the light weed. Open to the west and NW, so a W afternoon thermal can make the anchorage choppy in the later afternoon hours — this normally subsides by sunset. A beach bar/taverna at the E end operates seasonally. No vehicles are permitted on Spetses (like Hydra), adding to the peaceful atmosphere ashore.

Recommended Anchor Alarm Radius
70m covers normal swing in 3â6m on a sand/weed bottom. The surrounding pine hills provide good NEâSE deflection, reducing effective fetch. If anchored in the eastern cove in clean sand, alarm can be reduced to 50m. The bay opens to the W and NW — if afternoon W thermal or a NW front builds, increase to 90m and verify holding.
Main bay anchorage (free swinging): 70m recommended — Anchor in 3â6m in the eastern half of the bay on sand with light weed.
Eastern cove (calmer, shallower): 50m recommended — Smaller inner cove at the E end of the beach offers cleaner sand and excellent holding in 2â4m.
Anchoring Zones
Zogeria Bay has 2 distinct anchoring zones, each with different depth, holding, and exposure characteristics. Choose the zone that matches your boat size and the expected overnight conditions.
Zone 1: Main bay anchorage (free swinging)
- Depth: 3–8m
- Bottom: sand, weed
- Holding: Good Holding
- Protected from: N, NE, E, SE, S
- Exposed to: W, NW, SW
- Recommended alarm radius: 70m
Anchor in 3â6m in the eastern half of the bay on sand with light weed. The pine-clad hills on the N and E sides deflect light meltemi effectively. Deeper water (6â8m) towards the bay centre also offers good holding. Snorkel to verify the anchor has penetrated any weed mat to the sand beneath. Very popular with flotillas — arrive before 13:00 in JulyâAugust.
Zone 2: Eastern cove (calmer, shallower)
- Depth: 2–4m
- Bottom: sand
- Holding: Excellent Holding
- Protected from: N, NE, E, SE, S, NW
- Exposed to: W, SW
- Recommended alarm radius: 50m
Smaller inner cove at the E end of the beach offers cleaner sand and excellent holding in 2â4m. Suitable for shallower draft vessels (under 1.8m) or dinghy anchor. More sheltered from afternoon W thermal. Space for 4â6 yachts. A small taverna/beach bar operates here in JulyâAugust.
Setting Your Anchor
The bottom at Zogeria Bay is primarily sand and weed with reliable holding when properly set. Use the following approach:
- Approach slowly and check your depth sounder on the way in. At 3–8m, deploy at minimum 7:1 scope (56m chain at 8m depth).
- Drop into the wind or current and pay out chain steadily as the boat drifts back — do not allow chain to pile on the anchor.
- Set firmly in reverse. Apply moderate throttle astern for 30–60 seconds. The chain should tighten without the boat moving backwards.
- Take a GPS bearing. Note your position once set and compare to the scope calculator to confirm you have adequate chain for the depth.
Recommended anchor types for this bottom: Rocna, Mantus, Spade, Delta. See our guide to anchor types by bottom for detailed comparisons.
Overnight Anchoring & Anchor Alarm
Overnight stays at Zogeria Bay are feasible but require monitoring. The anchorage is exposed to W and NW and SW winds.
Set your GPS anchor alarm to 70m radius before going below for the night.70m covers normal swing in 3â6m on a sand/weed bottom.
MayâJune and SeptemberâOctober offer uncrowded conditions, reliable NE shelter, and the pine forest at its most fragrant. JulyâAugust sees heavy flotilla traffic — the bay fills completely most afternoons. The W afternoon thermal is strongest in JuneâAugust. October is underrated: warm, quiet, and the sea is still 24°C+.
Navigation Hazards
- Afternoon WâNW thermal (F3â4) can build from 14:00â18:00 and make the anchorage choppy — ensure anchor is well set before going ashore
- Very busy in JulyâAugust — flotilla groups arrive from Poros and Porto Heli; arrive by 13:00 for swinging room
- Light weed patches over sand: anchor may skate on weed before setting; snorkel to verify penetration into sand before leaving the boat
- Occasional ferry and speedboat wash from SpetsesâPorto Heli water taxis passing the bay mouth
- No dinghy dock — swimmers and dinghies share the beach; keep a watch for swimmers near the stern
Rules & Regulations
- Permit: Not required beyond standard Greek DEKPA transit log
- Anchoring fee: Free
- Restrictions: DEKPA and TEPAI required for all yachts over 7m. Posidonia patches around bay edges — anchor in the central sandy area. Do not land on the pine-forested slopes behind the beach — protected area. No motor vehicles on Spetses island.

Skipper's Tips
- The eastern cove offers the best holding and calmest conditions for overnight — shallower (2â4m) but cleaner sand and better shelter from afternoon W breeze
- Arrive before 13:00 in JulyâAugust to secure a decent spot; by 15:00 the bay is at capacity
- Zogeria is the perfect first-night stop on the Saronic circuit from Athens: 30nm from Piraeus, peaceful, beautiful, and well sheltered from the NE breeze
- Dinghy ashore to the beach bar for a sunset drink — the pine-scented air at dusk is exceptional; no mosquitoes once the sea breeze picks up
- Snorkel the anchor in clear water — visibility is typically 15â20m, making it easy to verify the anchor set from the surface
A note on this guide: The data in this guide has been researched from multiple sailing sources and is provided in good faith. Anchorage conditions — including depth, holding, and local regulations — can change. Before visiting, always check current weather forecasts, NAVTEX and VHF weather bulletins, and consult your up-to-date charts. Use a GPS anchor alarm and never rely solely on a guide for navigational decisions.
