Greece — Sporades

Best Anchorages in the Sporades

The Northern Sporades — Skiathos, Skopelos, and Alonnisos — are pine-forested islands with some of the clearest water in the Aegean. Home to Greece's largest National Marine Park and the critically endangered Mediterranean monk seal. These 10 anchorages have been verified for depth, holding, marine park zones, and anchor alarm radius.

About Sporades Sailing

Moderate Meltemi

The Sporades receive a moderate N–NE meltemi — typically F3–5 in summer afternoons, weaker than the open Cyclades thanks to the shelter of the Greek mainland to the west. Mornings are usually calm. The islands are close together (5–15nm hops), making it easy to be at anchor before the afternoon wind builds.

Three Very Different Islands

Skiathos is the liveliest — direct charter flights, beach clubs, and Koukounaries beach. Skopelos is quieter, more traditional, and famously the filming location for Mamma Mia. Alonnisos is the most remote and unspoiled, surrounded by a national marine park that extends to the uninhabited outer islands of Kyra Panagia and Gioura.

Best Timing

May–June and September are ideal. Skiathos in July–August is extremely busy — airport brings direct package tourists and the narrow strait at the airport is a famous spectacle (and hazard). Skopelos and Alonnisos remain manageable year-round. The outer islands (Kyra Panagia, Gioura, Psathoura) are at their best in settled June or September weather.

Skiathos Airport Strait

Aircraft approaching Skiathos airport pass extremely low over the narrow strait between Skiathos town and the islet of Bourtzi. This is a legitimate navigation hazard — do not anchor in the approach path, and keep watch when transiting. The strait is also used by high-speed ferries.

Alonnisos National Marine Park — Zone A & Zone B

The National Marine Park of Alonnisos and the Northern Sporades (NMPANS) is Greece's first and largest marine park. It covers Alonnisos and the uninhabited islands of Peristera, Kyra Panagia, Gioura, Psathoura, Piperi, and Skantzoura.

  • Zone A (strictest): Gioura, Piperi, Psathoura, and parts of the NW Alonnisos coast. No anchoring without a special permit. No swimming. No landing. Zone A exists primarily to protect monk seal breeding sites.
  • Zone B: Peristera, Kyra Panagia, Skantzoura, and most of Alonnisos. Anchoring permitted. No fishing. No spearfishing. No underwater lights at night.

The Mediterranean monk seal (Monachus monachus) is critically endangered — approximately 350 individuals remain in the entire Mediterranean. If you sight a seal, maintain 200m distance and do not approach. Never enter caves where seals may be resting.
