Ġnejna Bay Anchorage Guide
Also known as: Il-Bajja tal-Ġnejna, Gnejna Malta, Ġnejna anchorage
Ġnejna Bay is one of Malta's most scenic small anchorages — a narrow sandy bay flanked by limestone cliffs with traditional għerien (boat garages) carved into the cliff base along the waterline. Clear water over sand in 3–9m with good holding. Well-protected from northerly winds by the surrounding headlands. Exposed to southerly and westerly conditions. A car park and small seasonal café make this a popular spot with locals. Excellent snorkeling off the rocky headlands. One of the most authentic-feeling anchorages on Malta.

Anchorage in Ġnejna Bay — a small, attractive sandy bay with clear water on Malta's northwest coast. Good sand holding in 3–9m. Protected from N and NE by the headlands. Exposed to S, SW, and W — avoid in southerly conditions. The bay has traditional boathouses (għerien) carved into the cliff base. A car park and small snack bar operate in summer. Rocky headlands provide excellent snorkeling.
Setting Your Anchor
The bottom at Ġnejna Bay is primarily sand with reliable holding when properly set.
- Monitor VHF Ch 16 for Malta Radio — the coast guard monitors continuously. Ferry and commercial vessel traffic in St Paul's Bay area requires attention.
- Anchor in 3–9m. Malta's tidal range is negligible (<30cm) — no tidal depth correction needed. Wind-driven sea level variation up to 0.5m possible in strong winds.
- Deploy at least 5:1 scope (45m chain at 9m depth). Verify the bottom is sand — check for Posidonia seagrass (EU protected) before dropping the anchor.
- Set firmly in reverse — 30–60 seconds at moderate throttle. Use the scope calculator to confirm adequate chain.
Recommended anchor types: Rocna, Spade, Delta.
Overnight Anchoring & Anchor Alarm
Overnight stays at Ġnejna Bay are best in settled conditions — the anchorage is exposed to S and SW and W winds. The primary overnight hazard in north Malta is the Gregale NE gale (Nov–Mar): north-facing bays become dangerous — seek shelter in Grand Harbour or Marsaxlokk Bay immediately at any Gregale forecast.
Set your GPS anchor alarm to 85m radius before going below. 85m radius in 4–7m clean sand. Good holding. Open to S, SW, and W — monitor southerly forecasts. Traditional boathouses in the bay — anchor with consideration for the għerien (traditional Maltese boathouses).
April–October. Best in N or NE conditions when the bay is sheltered. Avoid in S and SW swell. October–April with southerly conditions are a concern — check forecast before settling for overnight.
Navigation Hazards
- S, SW, and W exposure — leave in southerly or westerly conditions
- Traditional boathouses (għerien) at cliff base — maintain clearance from these structures and local boats
- Rocky headlands at bay margins — anchor in sandy centre
Rules & Regulations
- EU member (not Schengen): No customs formalities for EU boats arriving from EU ports. Non-EU boats: Grand Harbour (Valletta) is the official 24/7 customs clearance point for Malta mainland. EES biometric recording required for non-EU crew since October 2025.
- Posidonia: EU protected throughout Maltese waters — anchor only in sand or mud patches. Fines apply. Use mooring buoys where provided.
- Anchoring fee: Free
- Restrictions: Keep clear of the traditional boathouses (għerien) along the cliff base — local fishing boats use these. Sandy patches only — rocky substrate at bay margins. Exposed to S/SW: leave in southerly conditions.

Always check forecasts and current official charts before visiting. Use a GPS anchor alarm and never rely solely on a guide for navigational decisions.
Sleep peacefully at Ġnejna Bay
Safety Anchor Alarm monitors your GPS position continuously — essential in north Malta where the Gregale NE gale can develop overnight and turn Mellieħa Bay's excellent anchorage into a dangerous lee shore.
