Baošić Anchorage Guide
Also known as: Baosic, Uvala Baošić
Baošić is a small traditional Montenegrin village on the S shore of Herceg Novi Bay, overlooked by most charter boats that bypass it for Herceg Novi town. The bay offers good mud holding in 3–8m and reasonable shelter from the NE Bora thanks to the hillside above the village. The atmosphere is authentically Montenegrin — stone houses, a small beach, fishing nets, and very little tourism infrastructure, which is precisely its appeal. There are no facilities, but Zelenika (3nm N) provides everything needed. Montenegro cruising permit mandatory. Always check current permit requirements.

Recommended Anchor Alarm Radius
70m appropriate in 3–6m on mud. Reduce to 50m if other boats are present — the bay is compact. In Bora, the NE hill shelter makes this significantly calmer than the open roadstead; still set maximum scope and keep alarm active.

Small traditional village with a protected bay and good mud holding in 3–8m. The surrounding hills provide shelter from the NE Bora direction — notably calmer than the open outer bay. The village is tiny and very peaceful, with a small beach and a handful of stone houses. Excellent mud anchor ground; the hook buries quickly. Swing room is moderate — 4–6 boats fit comfortably before the anchorage becomes crowded. Keep clear of local fishing boat moorings near the village quay.
Setting Your Anchor
The bottom at Baošić is primarily mud with reliable holding when properly set.
- Approach slowly and check your depth sounder. At 3–8m, deploy minimum 7:1 scope (56m chain at 8m depth).
- Drop into the wind and pay out chain steadily as the boat drifts back.
- Set firmly in reverse — 30–60 seconds at moderate throttle. The chain should tighten without the boat moving backwards.
- Set the anchor alarm immediately after setting — in the Boka Kotorska, Bora can arrive with as little as 30 minutes' warning. Use the scope calculator to confirm adequate chain length.
Recommended anchor types: Rocna, Mantus, Spade. See our guide to anchor types by bottom.
Overnight Anchoring & Anchor Alarm
Overnight stays at Baošić are feasible but require vigilance — the anchorage is exposed to W and SW winds.
Set your GPS anchor alarm to 70m radius before going below. 70m appropriate in 3–6m on mud. Reduce to 50m if other boats are present — the bay is compact. In Bora, the NE hill shelter makes this significantly calmer than the open roadstead; still set maximum scope and keep alarm active.
Quiet throughout the season. Rarely more than 2–3 boats at anchor even in July–August. Best in May–June and September–October when the hills above the village are at their greenest.
Navigation Hazards
- W and SW exposure — afternoon Maestral enters the bay; manageable in summer but uncomfortable if persistent
- Bora: hill shelter is good but not complete — in a major Bora event, move to Morinj (inside bay) for full protection
- Shoal patches near the beach — use echosounder on approach; do not anchor in less than 3m
- No facilities — self-sufficient only; nearest services at Zelenika (3nm N)
Rules & Regulations
- Montenegro cruising permit (vignette): Mandatory for all foreign yachts — purchase at first port of entry. From ~€89/month. Always check current permit requirements.
- Anchoring fee: Free to anchor.
- Maximum stay: 5 days
- Restrictions: Keep clear of fishing boat moorings near the village quay. No anchoring within 30m of the beach.
- Risan Bay: Anchoring permanently prohibited in the entire Bay of Risan (underwater archaeological site). Morinj Bay is OK.

Skipper's Tips
- An excellent quiet alternative to Herceg Novi town — especially for boats that want to explore the outer bay without the bustle of the main town anchorage
- The mud holds so well that departure often requires a burst of engine power — budget extra time in the morning
- Walk the coastal path to Herceg Novi (45 minutes) for provisioning and the old town; the path has excellent views across the bay
A note on this guide: Data has been researched from multiple sailing sources and is provided in good faith. Conditions — depth, holding, regulations — can change. Always check forecasts, NAVTEX, and current official charts before visiting. Use a GPS anchor alarm and never rely solely on a guide for navigational decisions.
Sleep peacefully at Baošić
Safety Anchor Alarm monitors your GPS position continuously and sounds a loud alarm the moment your boat drifts — essential in the Boka Kotorska where Bora can arrive within 30 minutes of the first cap clouds forming on the peaks.
