Pržno (Tivat area) Anchorage Guide

Pržno on the Lustica coast is a small sandy bay 2nm W of the Tivat Bay entrance — not to be confused with the more famous Pržno near Sveti Stefan on the Budva Riviera to the SE. This Pržno is a quieter affair: a sandy beach, one seasonal fish restaurant, beautiful turquoise water over a white sand bottom, and minimal tourist infrastructure. The bay faces W, giving it excellent early morning calm and the worst possible afternoon Maestral exposure — the westerly thermal fills in from midday and builds throughout the afternoon, making the anchorage increasingly uncomfortable. The approach window is clear: arrive in the morning, enjoy the turquoise water and the restaurant, and depart by early afternoon before the Maestral builds, or — if you must stay overnight — monitor the forecast carefully and leave if westerly conditions develop. The bay's proximity to Tivat (2nm by sea) makes it easy to duck back to shelter quickly if needed. The water quality and colour here is genuinely outstanding: among the clearest on the Montenegrin coast.

Recommended Anchor Alarm Radius

60m appropriate for the main bay anchorage in 3–4m of sand. The W, NW, and SW exposure is the defining limitation of Pržno — it is a fair-weather anchorage only. The Bora protection from the Lustica hills is adequate for moderate events (up to approximately F4, 15–20 knots), but this is NOT a Bora refuge — depart immediately if Bora is forecast above F4 and return to Tivat Bay. The sand holding on a clean bottom is generally reliable but can fail in strong crosswinds if the anchor has not set properly.

Zone 1: Main bay — sandy bottom in turquoise water

The main anchorage in 3–4m on sand in the centre of the bay. Holding is good on clean sand. The turquoise colour of the water here — a function of the white sand bottom and shallow depth — is one of the most striking visual features of the Lustica coast. Good protection from N and NE (Bora direction) from the Lustica hills behind. Significant exposure to W, NW, and SW — depart if any westerly conditions are forecast above F4. One fish restaurant on the shore operates seasonally.

Zone 2: Inner bay — shallowest and calmest

The inner bay in 2–3m on clean sand — very shallow; suitable for shoal-draft vessels and catamarans only. The hills to the NW provide additional shelter from the NW direction compared to the outer bay. Water clarity is exceptional in this section — the sand bottom is visible clearly from the surface in 3m of water. Very limited Bora shelter compared to the inner Tivat Bay anchorages. Do not stay overnight if Bora is in the forecast.

Zone 3: Bay entrance — deeper water for deeper keels

The bay entrance area in 4–7m on sand and rock. Holding is fair — some rock patches near the headlands. More exposed to W and NW. This position allows deeper-keeled vessels to access Pržno while remaining clear of the inner bay shoals. A daytime stop position rather than an overnight anchorage in any unsettled conditions. The rock patches near the headlands require careful anchoring — snorkel to verify placement if in doubt.

Setting Your Anchor

The bottom at Pržno (Tivat area) is primarily sand with reliable holding when properly set.

  1. Check for shellfish farm buoys before approaching. Orange buoys mark the farm perimeter — stay well clear and anchor only in the SE section of the bay.
  2. Approach slowly and check your depth sounder. At 35m, deploy minimum 7:1 scope (35m chain at 5m depth).
  3. Set firmly in reverse — 30–60 seconds at moderate throttle. Mud and sand bottom sets well on the first attempt.
  4. Note ferry and superyacht wash. The Lepetane ferry and Porto Montenegro traffic create periodic wash — ensure you have adequate scope and use the scope calculator to confirm chain length.

Recommended anchor types: Rocna, Mantus, Spade.

Overnight Anchoring & Anchor Alarm

Overnight stays at Pržno (Tivat area) are feasible but require monitoring — the anchorage is exposed to W and NW and SW winds.

Set your GPS anchor alarm to 60m radius before going below. 60m appropriate for the main bay anchorage in 3–4m of sand. The W, NW, and SW exposure is the defining limitation of Pržno — it is a fair-weather anchorage only. June–September only. July and August are the most reliable months for morning calm. May and October are weather-dependent — the Maestral is less regular but Bora is more frequent; only visit with a confirmed settled forecast. Avoid as an overnight anchorage in anything other than flat-calm, settled conditions.

Navigation Hazards

  • W, NW, and SW exposure: the afternoon Maestral builds to F4–5 from the W regularly in high summer; depart by early afternoon if overnight stay was not planned; do not stay overnight if westerly conditions are forecast.
  • LIMITED BORA SHELTER: The Lustica hills provide moderate protection from NE Bora but this is NOT a Bora refuge — depart immediately if Bora is forecast above F4 and proceed to Tivat Bay or Bigova.
  • Rock patches at bay entrance near headlands — use echosounder on approach and snorkel to verify anchor placement if anchoring near the bay sides.
  • Shallow inner bay (2–3m) — approach the inner section slowly; draft over 1.5m may touch in the shallowest areas.
  • Sandy bottom can shift anchor position in crosswinds if not well buried — set with engine reverse and verify holding.

  • Restrictions: FAIR-WEATHER ANCHORAGE ONLY: Depart if Bora is forecast above F4 — this bay offers limited Bora shelter. Depart by midday or early afternoon if staying overnight is not planned — the afternoon Maestral from the W builds reliably and makes the anchorage uncomfortable. Keep clear of the beach swimming area near the restaurant.
  • Shellfish farms: Do not anchor in W or NW Tivat Bay — active mussel/oyster farms with submerged lines.

Skipper's Tips

  1. This anchorage is best treated as a morning destination — arrive at 09:00 when the bay is glassy and the turquoise water is at its most spectacular; swim, visit the restaurant for lunch, and depart by 13:00 before the Maestral builds.
  2. The water clarity here is extraordinary — a snorkel over the white sand bottom in 3–4m of water is one of those moments that makes coastal cruising worth the effort.
  3. Do not confuse this Pržno with the famous Pržno near Sveti Stefan (on the Budva Riviera, ~15nm SE) — this bay is smaller, quieter, and much less visited.
  4. If the fish restaurant is open, eat there — fresh catch from the bay, no tourist pricing, genuinely good food. Confirm they are operating before anchoring for a long lunch.
  5. Tivat Bay is 2nm E and provides full Bora shelter — in any doubt about westerly conditions, anchor here for the morning and retreat to Tivat for the afternoon and overnight.
