Tivat Town Quay Anchorage Guide
Also known as: Tivat anchorage, Tivat Bay SE, Tivat free anchorage
The free anchorage on the SE side of Tivat Bay — off the town quay and clear of the shellfish farms — is the best-protected free anchorage in Montenegro and one of the finest in the entire Adriatic. Tivat Bay is an almost perfect natural shelter: an inland sea enclosed by mountains on every side, with only a narrow entrance to the NE via the Verige Strait. The katabatic Bora wind that ravages the outer coast is dramatically reduced inside the bay — in moderate Bora events the bay surface barely ruffles while the outer Adriatic is at storm force. The anchorage off the town quay is in 4–8m of excellent mud, free of charge, with full provisioning within a 10-minute walk: two supermarkets, a covered market, a chandlery, a fuel station, and Tivat airport just 2km away for crew changes. Porto Montenegro — the world-class luxury marina developed in a former Yugoslav navy base across the bay — is visible from the anchorage, its superyachts a reminder that this bay attracts the full spectrum of the sailing world. The town itself is pleasant without being spectacular: a concrete promenade, good bakeries, an ATM, and wifi in the cafés. Montenegro cruising permit (vignette) must be purchased here or at another port of entry before anchoring.

Recommended Anchor Alarm Radius
70m covers comfortable swing in 4–7m of mud with 5:1 scope. The bay geometry eliminates meaningful swell or directional exposure — the alarm radius here functions purely as a drag indicator, not a weather-exposure calculation. In Bora events (which are significantly reduced inside the bay), gusts of 25–35 knots can still occur: extend scope to 6:1 and alarm to 90m. The SE bay is free of the shellfish farm buoys and lines that make W bay anchoring dangerous.
SE bay — main free anchorage on mud: 70m recommended — The primary free anchorage in 4–7m on thick mud SE of the town quay and well clear of the shellfish farms in the W bay.
Closer inshore — stern-to option: 40m recommended — For boats drawing under 2m, a stern-to position against the town waterfront is sometimes available in 2–3m.
Outer SE bay — deeper swing room: 90m recommended — Deeper water in the outer SE quadrant for larger vessels or when the nearshore anchorage is crowded.
Anchoring Zones
Tivat Town Quay has 3 distinct anchoring zones, each with different depth, holding, and exposure characteristics.
Zone 1: SE bay — main free anchorage on mud
- Depth: 4–8m
- Bottom: mud
- Holding: Excellent holding
- Protected from: N, NE, E, SE, S, W, SW, NW
- Recommended alarm radius: 70m
The primary free anchorage in 4–7m on thick mud SE of the town quay and well clear of the shellfish farms in the W bay. All-round shelter from the mountain walls that enclose Tivat Bay on every side — in normal conditions the bay surface is glassy even when Bora howls on the outer coast. Mud holding is tenacious: set firmly with engine reverse and the anchor will hold through any Bora. Porto Montenegro's superyacht berths are visible across the bay 0.5nm SW — the contrast between free anchoring and €300+/night marina berths is one of the pleasures of sailing independently here. Keep clear of the town quay approach and the small ferry pier to the NW.
Zone 2: Closer inshore — stern-to option
- Depth: 2–4m
- Bottom: mud, sand
- Holding: Good holding
- Protected from: N, NE, E, SE, S, W, SW, NW
- Recommended alarm radius: 40m
For boats drawing under 2m, a stern-to position against the town waterfront is sometimes available in 2–3m. Sand-mud bottom, good holding. The town quay has a small supermarket and café within 5 minutes on foot. This shallow position suits shoal-draft catamarans and smaller monohulls; deeper vessels should anchor further out in confirmed 4m+ of water. Avoid the ferry pier area entirely.
Zone 3: Outer SE bay — deeper swing room
- Depth: 6–12m
- Bottom: mud
- Holding: Excellent holding
- Protected from: N, NE, E, SE, S, W, SW, NW
- Recommended alarm radius: 90m
Deeper water in the outer SE quadrant for larger vessels or when the nearshore anchorage is crowded. Mud holding remains excellent throughout the SE bay. The deeper position has more swing room but requires correspondingly more scope — 6:1 in 10m means 60m minimum rode. The all-round mountain shelter makes this one of the safest deep-water anchorages in the Adriatic. Confirm the anchor is not over any buried utility cables from the town quay area (cables run along the E shore — anchor no closer than 80m to the quay wall).
Setting Your Anchor
The bottom at Tivat Town Quay is primarily mud with reliable holding when properly set.
- Check for shellfish farm buoys before approaching. Orange buoys mark the farm perimeter — stay well clear and anchor only in the SE section of the bay.
- Approach slowly and check your depth sounder. At 4–8m, deploy minimum 7:1 scope (56m chain at 8m depth).
- Set firmly in reverse — 30–60 seconds at moderate throttle. Mud and sand bottom sets well on the first attempt.
- Note ferry and superyacht wash. The Lepetane ferry and Porto Montenegro traffic create periodic wash — ensure you have adequate scope and use the scope calculator to confirm chain length.
Recommended anchor types: Rocna, Mantus, Spade, Delta, CQR.
Overnight Anchoring & Anchor Alarm
Overnight stays at Tivat Town Quay are excellent — all-round protection means minimal boat movement.
Set your GPS anchor alarm to 70m radius before going below.
Usable year-round as a port of entry anchorage. The all-round mountain shelter makes it one of the rare anchorages suitable in winter for boats in transit. Peak season July–August sees moderate traffic — the SE bay has sufficient room to avoid crowding. Best in late May and September when provisioning is easy, the town is calm, and the bay is uncrowded.
Navigation Hazards
- SHELLFISH FARMS (CRITICAL): The W and NW parts of Tivat Bay contain active shellfish (mussel and oyster) farms — marked with orange buoys and submerged lines. Do not anchor west of the Porto Montenegro fairway entry — chain fouling is guaranteed. Anchor only in the SE quadrant of the bay.
- VERIGE STRAIT: Cruise ships up to 360m transit the Verige Strait (NE entrance) regularly in season — do not anchor within 500m of the strait transit channel and do not attempt to cross when a cruise ship is approaching.
- LEPETANE FERRY: The Lepetane–Kamenari car ferry crosses the NE part of Tivat Bay. Fast-moving ferry with limited manoeuvring room — keep 200m clear of its track.
- Reduced but not absent Bora: In severe Bora events the bay is significantly calmer than the outer coast, but gusts of 30–40 knots are possible inside the bay — set the anchor firmly and keep the alarm active overnight.
- Submerged utility cables run along the E shore near the quay — do not anchor within 80m of the quay wall.
Rules & Regulations
- Montenegro cruising permit (vignette): Mandatory for all foreign yachts. Porto Montenegro is a valid port of entry. From ~€89/month.
- Anchoring fee: Free to anchor on the SE side of Tivat Bay. Vignette covers anchorage in non-municipal waters.
- Maximum stay: 7 days
- Restrictions: SHELLFISH FARMS: Do NOT anchor in the W or NW parts of Tivat Bay — active mussel and oyster farms with submerged lines will foul anchor chains. Anchoring permitted SE side only. Keep clear of the town quay approach and ferry pier. Do not anchor within 30m of the shore.
- Shellfish farms: Do not anchor in W or NW Tivat Bay — active mussel/oyster farms with submerged lines.

Skipper's Tips
- Anchor on the SE side only — the shellfish farm buoys in the W bay look innocuous from a distance but the anchor chain will be comprehensively fouled; the rule is simple: stay east of the Porto Montenegro fairway entry.
- Tivat airport is 2km from the town quay — this is one of very few cruising anchorages in the Adriatic where crew changes by air are genuinely convenient; anchor here the night before a crew change.
- Porto Montenegro's fuel dock, pump-out, and chandlery are accessible via dinghy from the town anchorage — cross the bay to fuel up without paying marina rates.
- The covered market on the Tivat waterfront (mornings only) stocks excellent local produce — peppers, tomatoes, honey, and the strong Montenegrin soft cheese (kajmak) that keeps well aboard.
- In severe Bora, the mountains surrounding Tivat Bay reduce wind speed dramatically compared to the outer coast — this is the reason experienced Adriatic sailors consider Tivat Bay the best all-weather anchorage in Montenegro.
A note on this guide: Data has been researched from multiple sailing sources and is provided in good faith. Conditions — depth, holding, regulations — can change. Always check forecasts and current official charts before visiting. Use a GPS anchor alarm and never rely solely on a guide for navigational decisions.
Sleep peacefully at Tivat Town Quay
Safety Anchor Alarm monitors your GPS position continuously and sounds a loud alarm the moment your boat drifts — even in Tivat Bay where superyacht wakes and ferry wash can move a well-anchored boat without warning.
