Sveti Stefan Bay Anchorage Guide
Also known as: Sveti Stefan anchorage, Aman Sveti Stefan bay
Sveti Stefan is Montenegro's most iconic image — a tiny island village converted into the Aman Sveti Stefan luxury hotel, connected to the mainland by a narrow isthmus, with ruby-red rooftops rising from the sea. The anchorage in the bay offers good sand holding in 3–8m with a front-row view of one of the Adriatic's most photographed scenes. CRITICAL NOTE: The island is a private luxury hotel and its beaches (on both sides of the isthmus) are restricted to hotel guests. Anchor off the mainland beaches N or S of the isthmus and maintain a respectful distance from the hotel beach areas. The bay is exposed to S and SW — settled weather only for overnight stays. Montenegro cruising permit mandatory. Always check current permit requirements.

Anchor in the bay N and S of the Sveti Stefan isthmus, off the mainland beaches — NOT alongside the hotel island itself. The hotel beaches (both sides of the isthmus) are PRIVATE and access is restricted to hotel guests. Anchor in 3–8m on sand off the public mainland beaches and maintain distance from the hotel beach. Good sand holding throughout the bay. Exposed to S and SW — settled weather only. The view of the iconic ruby-red rooftop island hotel from the anchorage is one of the most photographed in Montenegro.
Setting Your Anchor
The bottom at Sveti Stefan Bay is primarily sand with reliable holding when properly set.
- Approach slowly and check your depth sounder. At 3–8m, deploy minimum 7:1 scope (56m chain at 8m depth).
- Drop into the wind and pay out chain steadily as the boat drifts back.
- Set firmly in reverse — 30–60 seconds at moderate throttle. The chain should tighten without the boat moving backwards.
- Set the anchor alarm immediately after setting — on the south Montenegro coast, SW swell can build quickly and conditions can deteriorate faster than forecasts suggest. Use the scope calculator to confirm adequate chain length.
Recommended anchor types: Rocna, Mantus, Delta. See our guide to anchor types by bottom.
Overnight Anchoring & Anchor Alarm
Overnight stays at Sveti Stefan Bay are feasible but require vigilance — the anchorage is exposed to S and SW and W winds.
Set your GPS anchor alarm to 80m radius before going below. 80m in 3–6m on sand. Good holding throughout the bay. S/SW exposed — settled weather only for overnight. CRITICAL: Do not anchor alongside the hotel island or within the hotel beach restricted zones. Maintain distance from the private hotel beaches. Alarm must be active.
Best May–June and September–October for solitude and settled weather. July–August is the busiest season on the entire Montenegro Riviera — manageable but busy.
Navigation Hazards
- Hotel beach restricted zones — maintain distance from hotel beaches on both sides of the isthmus; do not approach hotel beach areas
- S/SW/W exposure — overnight only in settled weather; Jugo forecast means Budva marina (5nm N) is the safe alternative
- July–August very busy with tourist boats and excursion traffic from Budva — crowded anchorage; arrive early
- Photography boats and tourist excursion craft operate in the bay during daylight hours — maintain watch
Rules & Regulations
- Montenegro cruising permit (vignette): Mandatory for all foreign yachts — purchase at first port of entry. From ~€89/month. Always check current permit requirements.
- Anchoring fee: Free to anchor in the bay off mainland beaches.
- Maximum stay: 3 days
- Restrictions: CRITICAL: Sveti Stefan island is a private hotel (Aman). Hotel beaches on both sides of the isthmus are PRIVATE — anchor off mainland beaches only and maintain distance from hotel beach areas. Do not approach the island with the dinghy to the hotel side. S/SW exposed — settled weather only.

Skipper's Tips
- Anchor early — July–August sees the bay fill completely by midday with charter boats and excursion craft
- The sunrise view of Sveti Stefan from the anchorage (before the tourist boats arrive) is spectacular
- Land at the public beach S of the isthmus by dinghy; walk to the mainland village and viewpoint for the best photography angles
- Budva marina (5nm N) is the practical overnight alternative if the anchorage is too crowded or SW is forecast
A note on this guide: Data has been researched from multiple sailing sources and is provided in good faith. Conditions — depth, holding, regulations — can change. Always check forecasts, NAVTEX, and current official charts before visiting. Use a GPS anchor alarm and never rely solely on a guide for navigational decisions.
Sleep peacefully at Sveti Stefan Bay
Safety Anchor Alarm monitors your GPS position continuously and sounds a loud alarm the moment your boat drifts — essential on the south Montenegro coast where SW swell can build quickly on exposed anchorages and departures must be made at the first sign of change.
