About This Anchorage
Ceuta is one of Spain's two North African enclaves — a Spanish sovereign city of 85,000 people on a peninsula jutting into the Strait of Gibraltar on the African side. For sailors, Ceuta is invaluable: it is an EU/Schengen territory with duty-free status, making fuel, provisions, and alcohol significantly cheaper than anywhere in Morocco or mainland Spain. The marina is excellent, fully sheltered, and a perfect base for Strait transits in either direction. The city itself retains its Spanish colonial character — the old town, cathedral, fortifications, and Spanish plazas give it a surreal quality of Europe transplanted to African soil. The border crossing into Morocco (Fnideq/Tetouan) is 2km away and provides access to Tetouan's magnificent traditional medina (UNESCO). Ceuta is the eastern end of the westbound Strait crossing — plan transit timing carefully for current.

Skipper's Tips
- →Duty-free fuel in Ceuta saves significant cost — fill all tanks and jerry cans before departing east
- →Use Ceuta to wait for Levanter to pass before transiting east — safer to wait here than rush
- →Tetouan medina (UNESCO) is 20 minutes by taxi from the border — one of the most authentic in Morocco; bring passport
- →Westbound Strait transit from Ceuta: time departure 2 hours before high water; current weakest at that point
- →Monitor Tarifa Traffic VHF 10 continuously during all Strait transits — they broadcast weather updates
