55m on Zaan river mud and clay in 2–3.5m. Tidal range 0.3–0.5m — minimal but use slightly more scope than a non-tidal anchorage. Commercial barge wash is the main challenge — use adequate fenders and strong anchor set.

About This Anchorage

Zaanse Schans is the most-visited windmill site in the Netherlands — eight working windmills (papiermakers, oliemolens, verfmolens, zaagmolen) clustered along the Zaan river bank in their original landscape. The Zaan industrial region (Zaanstreek) was the world's first industrial zone — in the 17th century, 1,000 windmills processed timber, grain, spices, paper, and paint along this river; the Dutch East India Company (VOC) built its ships from Zaan timber. The anchorage opposite the windmill area puts visiting sailors directly in front of the working mills — the sound of windmill sails turning on a westerly morning is extraordinary. The Albert Heijn museum grocery store (the original shop from 1887) is in Zaanse Schans. The whole site is a working open-air museum — entry free; individual attractions charge.

  • !Tidal river (0.3–0.5m) — minor tidal effect but allows for some current

  • !Commercial activity in Zaandam area — industrial barges and shipping

Skipper's Tips

  • The best time to visit Zaanse Schans by anchor is early morning (07:00–09:00) before the tourist coaches arrive — the windmills in morning light with no crowds is extraordinary
  • The windmills operate when wind is sufficient (usually weekday mornings in summer) — check the Zaanse Schans website for milling schedule
  • The Albert Heijn museum grocery store (1887 original) in Zaanse Schans is the origin of the Netherlands' largest supermarket chain — authentically preserved
  • The Zaan river connects to the North Sea Canal north of Amsterdam — a useful inland route avoiding the busy IJ waterway
  • Peter the Great (Tsar of Russia) worked incognito as a carpenter in Zaandam in 1697 learning Dutch shipbuilding — the tiny cottage where he stayed is preserved in central Zaandam
