About This Anchorage

Balk is a small Frisian market village at the northwestern edge of the Gaasterland — the only significantly hilly area in Friesland, a glacial moraine rising 15–30m above the surrounding polder landscape. The Gaasterland cliffs (klif) on the IJsselmeer shore are the most dramatic coastal features in SW Friesland — eroded by centuries of Zuiderzee wave action, the clay cliffs rise directly from the lake. Balk is the principal gateway to the Slotermeer lake (north to Sloten) and to the Gaasterland cycle routes. The village has a traditional Frisian church, a weekly market, and full provisioning. The Balk harbour is less crowded than Sneek or Lemmer — a quieter alternative for the southern Frisian circuit. From Balk, the circuit to Sloten (5nm north), Woudsend (8nm north), and Heeg (10nm northeast) is achievable in 2–3 days.

  • !Maximum draught 1.5m — Slotermeer approach is very shallow in some sections; ANWB waterkaart essential
  • !Limited depth throughout — entire southern Frisian system is very shallow

  • !Gaasterland IJsselmeer shore cliffs — not accessible by water (cliff erosion; no landing); view from a safe distance

Skipper's Tips

  • Bicycle from Balk to the Gaasterland klif (IJsselmeer clay cliffs, 5km) — the most dramatic landscape in Friesland; the cliffs overlook the open IJsselmeer and are the only significant topographic feature in the region
  • The southern Frisian circuit (Balk–Sloten–Woudsend–Heeg) is the quietest and most authentic part of the Frisian lakes system — minimal tourist infrastructure, maximum Frisian character
  • Balk market day (Friday morning) has local Frisian produce — cheese, butter, and the Frisian specialty oranjekoek (orange cake)
  • The cycle routes through Gaasterland (marked, 35km circuit from Balk) pass through the only forested hills in Friesland — a complete contrast to the flat lake landscape
  • Balk is the least-known entry point to the Frisian lakes for sailors arriving from the IJsselmeer via Stavoren (20nm) — a quieter alternative to Lemmer with the same lake access

Facilities

Best Months & Season

May, Jun, Jul, Aug, Sep

May–September. Balk is the least visited of the major Frisian lake ports — the Gaasterland landscape and the southern circuit keep it off the main tourist route. An excellent choice for sailors seeking authentic Frisian character without the Sneekweek crowds.
