60m on excellent Lauwersmeer mud in 2–4m. No tidal swing in the marina (Lauwersmeer is a non-tidal freshwater lake). Fully sheltered in all conditions. The Waddenzee side of the sluice is tidal — use the marina (lake side) for overnight stays.
About This Anchorage
Lauwersoog is the principal mainland staging harbour for the eastern Wadden Sea — the departure point for Schiermonnikoog ferry (45 minutes), the eastern Waddenzee passages, and the approach to Rottumeroog. The port was built in 1969 when the Lauwerszee (tidal bay) was closed by the Lauwersmeer dam — the closure converted the tidal bay into a freshwater nature reserve (Lauwersmeer, Natura 2000) that is now one of the most important bird reserves in the Netherlands. The Lauwersmeer is navigable by small boat — a unique combination of Wadden staging harbour and nature reserve directly behind. The marina (Noordergat) on the Lauwersmeer side is large, modern, and well-equipped — the best in the eastern Netherlands. The Waddenzee side hosts the Schiermonnikoog ferry and commercial fishing vessels. The Westgat channel (to Schiermonnikoog) starts here.

- Anchoring fee
- Marina fee approx €16–22/night
- Permit required
- No
Restrictions: Marina on Lauwersmeer (non-tidal) side — level controlled by sluice; Lauwersmeer nature reserve — no anchoring in nature areas; Waddenzee side is tidal; Westgat channel (to Schiermonnikoog) — navigate only within 2hrs of HW; ferry traffic on Waddenzee side — monitor VHF; Waddengids essential for the eastern Wadden.
Hazards
- !Westgat channel (Schiermonnikoog approach) — very shallow at LW; navigate only within 2hrs of HW; tidal streams 2kt
- !Schiermonnikoog ferry on Waddenzee side — large vessel manoeuvring; monitor VHF
- !Lauwersmeer nature reserve — strict no-entry zones for boats in bird areas (April–August)
- !Eastern Waddenzee navigation — more remote than western areas; Waddengids essential; channels less frequently surveyed
Skipper's Tips
- →Lauwersoog is the ideal base for Schiermonnikoog — the 45-minute ferry makes a day visit easy while the yacht stays in the well-equipped marina
- →The Lauwersmeer (behind the marina) is one of the finest bird reserves in the Netherlands — white-tailed eagles nest here; visit by dinghy in the open water areas
- →Stock up on provisions and fuel in Lauwersoog before heading east (Rottumeroog, Borkum) — the eastern Wadden coast has minimal facilities
- →The Westgat channel timing (HW -2hrs to HW +1hr) gives a 3-hour window for the passage to Schiermonnikoog (8nm) — plan accordingly
- →The Waddengids eastern section (Lauwersoog to Delfzijl) is less familiar to most Dutch sailors — allow extra time for checking channel positions before departing east
Facilities
Lauwersoog has a harbour café, restaurant, and a chandlery/shop. Fuel available. Good provisioning point before eastern Wadden passages. Closest full supermarket is in Dokkum (15km).
Nearest provisions: Lauwersoog harbour shop (limited); Dokkum 15km (0.1nm)
Best Months & Season
May, Jun, Jul, Aug, Sep
May–September. Lauwersoog is the quietest of the mainland Wadden ports — fewer tourists than Harlingen or Den Helder. The eastern Waddenzee is more remote and demanding than the western part.
