Recommended Anchor Alarm Radius

90m

90m in 4–18m on deep glacial silt. Outstanding holding — one of the most reliable fjord-head anchoring positions in Nordfjord. NW exposure to the main Nordfjord is the primary concern; the fjord head geometry reduces most wind fetch. Shore lines provide additional security.

About This Anchorage

Stryn is the main town at the head of Nordfjord and a gateway to Norway's glacier country. The town has good provisioning facilities and a pleasant guest harbour. Stryn is famous for its strawberries (the warm microclimate produced by the enclosing mountains and fjord makes this one of Norway's premier strawberry-growing areas) and for summer skiing on the Strynefjellet snowfield (open June–July most years). The Geiranger-Trollstigen National Tourist Route connects Stryn to Geiranger over the mountains — one of Norway's most dramatic road journeys.

Restrictions: Allemannsretten applies. Keep clear of the bridge upstream — the waterway above Stryn bridge has very limited clearance. Fish farms may be present in the outer approaches — check chart. Maintain 150m from inhabited dwellings.

Hazards

  • !Stryneelva flooding: the glacier-fed river can carry significant sediment in June–July snowmelt; river delta area shoals can change between visits — verify depth
  • !Katabatic night drainage from the glacier catchment: consistent overnight winds of 10–20 knots from the E; shore lines recommended
  • !Nordfjord main channel: NW exposure to the long Nordfjord fetch in any NW wind — leave the exposed outer bay positions if forecast shows NW 15+
  • !Summer skiing resort traffic: the mountain road above Stryn is very active June–July with skiers — bus service; not a maritime hazard but creates road traffic

Skipper's Tips

  • Stryn summer ski: Strynefjell snowfield (bus from Stryn, 1 hour) offers skiing in June and July — a remarkable experience to ski in T-shirt weather with fjord views below
  • Strawberry farms: Stryn area strawberries (June–July) are extraordinarily sweet due to the microclimate — buy from roadside stalls or the market; Norway's finest
  • Geiranger by road: the National Tourist Route Geiranger-Trollstigen is accessible by hire car from Stryn (1.5 hours via Dalsnibba); an outstanding complement to the fjord sailing
  • Kayaking: Strynevatnet lake (5km above Stryn, connected by river) offers flat-water kayaking in the glacier landscape — rental at the lake
