Recommended Anchor Alarm Radius

90m

90m in 5–22m on deep glacial silt. Outstanding holding — the Flåmselva deposits make this one of the best-holding anchorages in Sognefjord. S/SW is the open fjord direction but the inner location means swell is minimal even in a S wind. Ferry wash from the Hurtigruten and fjord cruise ships docking at Flåm is significant — double lines and anchor deeply.

About This Anchorage

Flåm is the most-visited cruise destination in Norway after Bergen and Geiranger — the terminus of the Flåmsbana mountain railway and the starting point for the Nærøyfjord cruise. Despite the crowds (up to 15 cruise ships and thousands of tourists per day in July), Flåm offers a genuine cruising base with good marina facilities and direct access to the most spectacular sections of Sognefjord. The anchorage outside the marina gives the Flåm experience without marina fees. The Flåmsbana (Flåm railway) is a remarkable engineering feat — 20km descending 867m through tunnels and bridges, with a brief stop at the spectacular Kjosfossen waterfall.

Hazards

  • !Massive tourist volume in July: up to 15 cruise ships per day in peak season — the village is overwhelmed; anchor out and visit early morning or evening for a bearable experience
  • !Cruise ship and ferry wash: large vessels docking at Flåm create significant wash — ensure anchor is deeply set and use double shore lines or marina berth during vessel movements
  • !Katabatic night winds down the Aurlandsfjord: can reach 25–35 knots after warm summer days; the deepest overnight winds in the Sognefjord area
  • !Summer flooding risk: the Flåmselva river has flooded in extreme rainfall years — the river mouth area can shoal suddenly after flash flooding; check echo sounder

Skipper's Tips

  • Arrive at Flåm by 08:00 or after 19:00 to avoid the worst crowds — the village between 10:00 and 18:00 in July is overwhelmed with cruise passengers
  • Ægir Brewery: book a table at this remarkable Viking hall-style brewpub for the best dinner on the fjord — their 'Nøgne Ø' style ales pair perfectly with the fjord scenery
  • Flåmsbana tickets: book online at www.flam.no well in advance for July — the train sells out weeks ahead; the train ride is genuinely worth the tourist crowds
  • Cycle to Aurland (5km flat riverside path): the cycling path from Flåm to Aurland village passes through apple orchards and traditional farms — superb
