Recommended Anchor Alarm Radius
90m
90m in 4–15m on glacial silt — some of the best anchor holding found anywhere on the Norwegian coast. River silt deposits create a thick, cohesive bottom that holds anchors tenaciously. Shore line to rocks recommended. Allow for some swing in the wider bay section.
About This Anchorage
The Uskedal arm of Hardangerfjord is a quieter, less-visited alternative to the popular Rosendal area. The small farming and fishing community of Uskedal sits at the head of the bay where the Uskedalselva river meets the fjord — the river deposits thick silt that creates outstanding anchor holding. The landscape is classic inner Hardangerfjord: steep mountainsides covered in mixed forest, waterfalls descending directly to the fjord, scattered farms with apple orchards on the gentler slopes. This is an excellent overnight anchorage for those who want the Hardangerfjord experience without the tourist crowds.

Anchoring Rules
- Anchoring fee
- Free
- Permit required
- No
Restrictions: Allemannsretten applies. River mouth area: do not anchor too far into the river channel where freshwater mixing reduces salinity and bottom conditions change. Maintain 150m from the farms and summer cottages on shore. Salmon nets may be set in the river mouth approach — watch carefully.
Hazards
- !Rapid depth changes near the river mouth — approach from the outer bay using echo sounder continuously; shoaling is abrupt
- !Katabatic night winds from the mountain above — can reach 20–25 knots in the valley drainage flow; stern line to shore is essential
- !Salmon nets in the river mouth area during summer salmon season — approach slowly and check for floats before anchoring
- !Cold meltwater from the river creates a surface freshwater layer — anchoring in this thermal zone can affect boat motion in light winds
Skipper's Tips
- →This is the kind of secret anchorage Norwegian sailors keep to themselves — a wild, peaceful overnight spot away from the tourist circuit
- →A dinghy or kayak up the Uskedalselva is rewarding — the river valley above has beautiful farms and forest walks
- →Water from the river is potable (good mountain water) — fill containers if needed
- →Anchor in 6–10m in the outer bay for the most reliable depth and best overnight comfort — the inner area near the river mouth can be very shallow at low tide

Best Months & Season
June, July, August
June–August. A remote, self-sufficient anchorage — carry all provisions. The fjord valley here traps warmth and can be significantly warmer than the outer coast on sunny days.
