100m radius on clean sand in 3–7m. Open to north — in N winds above F3 swell becomes uncomfortable quickly. Leave for Gdańsk Marina or Gdynia in any sustained northerly. Sandy bottom swings freely — maintain good radius.

About This Anchorage

Sopot is the jewel of the Polish Riviera — a historic spa town on the Baltic coast between Gdańsk and Gdynia. The offshore anchorage lies north of the famous Molo (pier) — at 515m the longest wooden pier in Europe — in clear Baltic water on clean sand. Sopot has been a fashionable resort since the 19th century and retains beautiful Art Nouveau and Functionalist architecture along its main promenade (Monte Cassino street). The beach is the finest in the Trójmiasto area. The Grand Hotel (1927) hosted Allied leaders after WWII. Summer brings crowds, music festivals (Sopot Music Festival), and the full atmosphere of a Baltic seaside resort. The anchorage is genuinely pleasant in settled SW-W conditions but completely exposed to any northerly.

Restrictions: Keep clear of bathing zones (marked with buoys in summer); no anchoring within 100m of the pier; stay outside marked swimming areas.

Hazards

  • !Open to full northern fetch across Gdańsk Bay — leave immediately in N or NE winds
  • !Bathing zone buoys extend some distance offshore in summer — check before anchoring
  • !Speedboats and jet skis operating from beach in summer
  • !Swell from passing ferries (Gdańsk–Helsinki route passes offshore)
  • !Sandy bottom — anchor drag risk in swell without regular checks

Skipper's Tips

  • Anchor north of the Molo in 4–5m on the cleanest sand — use a trip line in case of any debris
  • The walk along the Molo at sunset is one of the Baltic's finest experiences — well worth the tender ride ashore
  • Sopot is the most upmarket part of the Trójmiasto — use for provisioning premium goods and good restaurants
  • Leave at first sign of N wind — no shelter here in northerlies
  • The Sopot Hippodrome (race track) holds events in summer — ask locally for calendar
