About This Anchorage

Storön is a larger island in the inner High Coast archipelago, situated within the UNESCO World Heritage Site. The combination of dramatic High Coast cliffs visible in all directions, near-total wilderness, and excellent mud anchoring makes this one of the finest anchorages in the Gulf of Bothnia. The surrounding waters are near-freshwater — very clear (lower particle suspension than salt water) and teeming with perch, pike, and sea trout. The island has old-growth forest and ancient raised beach terraces at various heights, each representing a past shoreline as the land has risen from the sea over the last 9,000 years. There are no facilities whatsoever — this is true wilderness sailing.

Hazards

  • !Remote — 38nm from nearest full services at Härnösand
  • !Complex archipelago navigation requires current charts due to 8mm/year isostatic uplift
  • !No facilities of any kind — fully self-sufficient operation
  • !SW and NW Gulf of Bothnia exposure in outer approaches
  • !Near-freshwater reduces antifouling effectiveness and visual buoyancy cues are slightly different

Skipper's Tips

  • Fish from the boat in the near-freshwater — perch and pike are abundant and easy to catch
  • Raised beach terraces are visible on the island at 2–3m, 8–10m, and 20–30m altitude — living geology
  • The 8mm/year uplift means new skerries will emerge from the sea within your lifetime
  • Bring a kayak or inflatable — the inner skerry channels are too shallow for a yacht but ideal for small boats
  • Complete self-sufficiency is essential: water, food, fuel, and all spares before leaving Härnösand
  • The Gulf of Bothnia at this latitude never gets completely dark in July — midnight sun-adjacent conditions
