Bağla Anchorage Guide

Also known as: Bağla Koyu, Bagla Bay

Bağla has appeared on mariners' charts since the Piri Reis maps of 500 years ago — a testament to its natural value as a stopping point between Bodrum and the SW tip of the peninsula. The bay splits into a larger resort-fronted eastern bay and a quieter western sister bay; the western sub-bay is strongly preferred for overnight anchoring. Sandy bottom with good holding in 5–8m. A quieter alternative to Aspat and Karaincir, with moderate charter traffic.

The Anchorage

The smaller western sub-bay is preferred — quieter, no resort buildings on the hillside. Sandy bottom with good holding. The larger eastern bay fronts a resort and is noisier.

Setting Your Anchor

The bottom at Bağla is primarily sand with reliable holding when properly set. Use the following approach:

  1. Approach slowly and check your depth sounder on the way in. At 58m, deploy at minimum 7:1 scope (56m chain at 8m depth).
  2. Drop into the wind or current and pay out chain steadily as the boat drifts back — do not allow chain to pile on the anchor.
  3. Set firmly in reverse. Apply moderate throttle astern for 30–60 seconds. The chain should tighten without the boat moving backwards.
  4. Take a GPS bearing. Note your position once set and compare to the scope calculator to confirm you have adequate chain for the depth.

Recommended anchor types for this bottom: Rocna, Delta, CQR. See our guide to anchor types by bottom for detailed comparisons.

Overnight Anchoring & Anchor Alarm

Overnight stays at Bağla are feasible but require monitoring. The anchorage is exposed to S and SW winds.

Set your GPS anchor alarm to 80m radius before going below for the night.80m for the open south-facing bay. In moderate Meltemi the hillside provides some deflection. Sandy bottom is reliable; 80m gives comfortable clearance in the compact western sub-bay.

May–October. Moderate traffic makes it a quieter alternative to busier south coast bays. Functional in July–August Meltemi due to hillside deflection.

Navigation Hazards

  • Larger main bay fronts a resort — anchor in smaller western sub-bay for quieter overnight
  • Stony seabed near the beach entry — move outward into the sandy centre
  • South-facing aspect: southerly swell penetrates directly (rare in summer)
  • Moderate Meltemi swell can wrap around from the west in F4+

Rules & Regulations

  • Permit: Not required
  • Anchoring fee: Free

Facilities

  • Fresh water: Not available on site
  • Fuel: Not available — nearest: Turgutreis (7nm)
  • Restaurant: Resort-backed restaurants in main bay; more limited in western sister bay
  • Provisions: None on site — Turgutreis (7nm)

Skipper's Tips

  1. Favour the western sister bay — it is free of resort buildings and significantly quieter
  2. Sandy bottom toward the centre of the bay gives the best holding — avoid the stony margins near shore
  3. Bağla is a useful intermediate stop between Bodrum and the Turgutreis/Akyarlar anchorages

A note on this guide: The data in this guide has been researched from multiple sailing sources and is provided in good faith. Anchorage conditions — including depth, holding, and local regulations — can change. Before visiting, always check current weather forecasts, NAVTEX and VHF weather bulletins, and consult your up-to-date charts. Use a GPS anchor alarm and never rely solely on a guide for navigational decisions.

Sleep peacefully at Bağla

Safety Anchor Alarm monitors your GPS position continuously through the night and sounds a loud alarm the moment your boat drifts outside your set radius — so you can relax and enjoy the anchorage.
