The Beaulieu River is one of England's most enchanting tidal rivers — winding through the New Forest National Park to Buckler's Hard, a perfectly preserved 18th-century ship-building village where three of Nelson's Trafalgar fleet were built. The river provides exceptional all-weather shelter in the New Forest's unique landscape of ancient oak woodland and open heathland. The Beaulieu Motor Museum (Palace House and Beaulieu Abbey) is at the head of the river in Beaulieu village. Buckler's Hard has an excellent maritime museum and a welcoming inn. A private river managed by the Montagu family — harbour dues are charged but the setting justifies every penny.

Anchor Zones

Beaulieu River — anchorage off Buckler's Hard

Excellent

13m · Alarm: 55m

Anchor in 1–3m (CD) off the historic boatbuilding village of Buckler's Hard, 2nm up the river from the entrance. Soft mud throughout — exceptional holding. The river provides near-complete all-round shelter. Tidal range 3.5–4.0m springs (Solent double-HW). The river is tidal — plan entry timing carefully using Solent-specific tide tables. Beaulieu River Harbourmaster manages the river and charges dues. A permitted number of visitor moorings are available. Speed limit 5 knots throughout.

Setting Your Anchor Alarm

55m radius for the sheltered river anchorage. The river is narrow — swing room is very limited and a fore-and-aft mooring or use of the visitor moorings is recommended. In a strong spring ebb the tidal stream can be 2–3 knots in the narrows — ensure anchor is well set before the tide changes. The mud holding is outstanding and reliably holds in all wind conditions.

Recommended radius: 55m

Hazards & Warnings

  • !Entrance bar and shifting shoals at the river mouth — entry only near HW; use Solent-specific tide tables; consult Admiralty Chart 2021
  • !Strong tidal stream on ebb (up to 3 kt in narrows) — ensure anchor is set before the tide turns
  • !Private river — Harbour Master patrol boat will visit; pay dues promptly
  • !New Forest ponies and cattle on the riverbanks — do not approach, feed or disturb (protected wildlife)
  • !Very busy July–August — arrive early on the flood tide to secure anchorage space

Skipper's Tips

  • The Master Builder's Hotel at Buckler's Hard has one of the finest views of any riverside pub in England — book dinner in advance
  • Walk to Beaulieu village from Buckler's Hard (2nm, signposted riverside path) — the Beaulieu Motor Museum is world-class
  • The maritime museum at Buckler's Hard tells the story of the Trafalgar-era ship building — exceptional exhibits
  • Use the visitor moorings if available — the tidal stream makes single-anchor swinging awkward in the narrow river
