The Helford River is Cornwall's most celebrated cruising destination — a magical oak-lined tidal river famous as the setting of Daphne du Maurier's novel 'Frenchman's Creek'. The river winds 6nm inland from the Lizard Peninsula coast through ancient oak woodland and past the extraordinary side creek (Frenchman's Creek) that gives the novel its name. The anchorage off Helford village is perfectly sheltered and the surrounding woods echo with birdsong — completely unlike any other anchorage in south England. Helford Passage (north bank) has an excellent pub (Ferryboat Inn) accessible by dinghy. Nearby Porth Navas is another sheltered anchorage with an exceptional oyster farm. Falmouth (6nm) provides all yacht services.

Anchor Zones

Helford main anchorage — off Helford village

Excellent

25m · Alarm: 65m

Anchor in 2–4m (CD) in the broad reach off Helford village, clear of the swinging moorings. Soft mud — outstanding holding. The river provides near-complete all-round shelter once inside the entrance. Tidal range approximately 5.0–5.5m springs (SW Cornwall has the largest tidal range in this dataset — the Bristol Channel effect). Strong tidal streams on springs (2–3 kt in the narrows). Helford River Association manages moorings and anchoring — contact VHF Ch 16.

Frenchman's Creek — inner tributary

Excellent

13m · Alarm: 45m

Anchor in 1–2m (CD) in the extraordinary side creek immortalised by Daphne du Maurier's novel 'Frenchman's Creek'. Mud — excellent holding. Near-complete shelter. Entry only near HW — the creek dries extensively at LW. A profoundly peaceful and atmospheric anchorage.

Setting Your Anchor Alarm

65m radius for the main anchorage. With 5.0–5.5m tidal range at springs, actual depths at HW reach 7–10.5m; this is the largest tidal range in these files and scope must be planned carefully. The river is narrow — a fore-and-aft arrangement is preferred to single-anchor swinging in the busier sections.

Recommended radius: 65m

Hazards & Warnings

  • !Entrance bar — 1.5m (CD) at the river mouth; entry requires adequate tidal height; consult tide tables
  • !Strong tidal stream at springs (2–3 kt in the narrows) — set anchor carefully; use a trip line in the muddy bottom
  • !Oyster beds throughout the river — navigate in the channel only; anchor on mud not on oyster lease areas (marked on Admiralty Chart 147)
  • !Tidal range 5.0–5.5m springs — the largest in this region; plan scope very carefully for HW depths
  • !Very busy July–August — arrive before 14:00 for anchorage space near the village

Skipper's Tips

  • Row the dinghy up Frenchman's Creek at HW — one of the most atmospheric experiences in English cruising; du Maurier's descriptions are remarkably accurate
  • Ferryboat Inn at Helford Passage is accessible by dinghy from the main anchorage — book a table for dinner in summer (01326 250625)
  • Falmouth (6nm west, around the Lizard or via Carrick Roads) has full yacht services — fuel, water, chandlery and one of Cornwall's finest marinas
  • Porth Navas (2nm up the river) is a quieter anchorage with the Duchy Oyster Farm nearby — fresh oysters by arrangement
  • The coastal footpath from Helford village to Porthallow (3nm east) is one of Cornwall's finest short coastal walks
