Narta Lagoon South Anchorage Guide
Also known as: Laguna e Nartës, Nartë Lagoon, Narta Lagoon Anchorage
Narta Lagoon South is an unusual and beautiful overnight anchorage inside the Laguna e Nartës, a shallow tidal lagoonal system connected to the Adriatic S of Vlorë by a narrow entrance channel. Inside the lagoon, 1–3m of water over sand and mud provides excellent holding in completely flat conditions regardless of external sea state — the lagoon walls provide all-round protection that is simply unavailable in the open coast anchorages. The catch is severe: maximum draft 1.5m — the entrance channel and the lagoon interior are too shallow for any deeper-keeled yacht. For shoal-draft boats (centre-boarders, bilge keelers, shallow-fin designs under 1.5m draft), this is one of the most special overnight stops in the entire Albanian coast. The lagoon is a designated protected flamingo breeding habitat — a large colony of greater flamingos breeds on the mudflats April–June; respectful behaviour is essential and the experience of anchoring overnight among flamingos at sunset is genuinely extraordinary.

Recommended Anchor Alarm Radius
60m alarm radius for the S lagoon main anchorage in 1–3m. The completely enclosed lagoonal environment means weather is not a concern for dragging — the lagoon surface remains flat regardless of external conditions. The 60m radius is set to catch any slow movement in the very soft mud bottom after prolonged anchor loading (mud creep is possible in very soft substrates under tidal flow). The primary risk management requirement here is the draft restriction — at 1–3m depth any unexpected movement toward the shallow mudflats is a grounding risk; the alarm radius catches position change early. Monitor tidal stage: the lagoon is tidally influenced (Adriatic microtidal — 20–40cm range) and high vs. low water makes a meaningful difference at these depths.
S lagoon main anchorage — inside lagoonal system: 60m — The main anchorage in the S portion of the Laguna e Nartës in 1–3m over sand and mud inside the lagoonal system.
N lagoon near entrance channel — slightly deeper zone: 70m — The N portion of the Laguna e Nartës near the connection channel in 2–4m over mud — slightly deeper than the S main anchorage and positioned closer to the entrance channel for quicker exit in settled weather.
Anchoring Zones
Narta Lagoon South has 2 distinct anchoring zones, each with different depth, holding, and exposure characteristics.
Zone 1: S lagoon main anchorage — inside lagoonal system
- Depth: 1–3m
- Bottom: sand, mud
- Holding: Excellent holding
- Protected from: N, NE, E, SE, S, SW, W, NW
- Recommended alarm radius: 60m
The main anchorage in the S portion of the Laguna e Nartës in 1–3m over sand and mud inside the lagoonal system. The lagoon provides complete all-round protection from wind from all quadrants — the flat water inside is remarkable even when NW Adriatic swell is running outside. Holding is excellent on sand over mud — the anchor buries rapidly and holds firmly in the soft bottom. CRITICAL DRAFT RESTRICTION: maximum draft 1.5m — the lagoonal system is shallow throughout and the entrance channel is severely constrained; boats drawing more than 1.5m cannot enter safely. Approach the entrance channel in daylight only, at dead slow speed on echosounder, following the buoyed channel markers. The lagoon is a protected flamingo breeding habitat — April through June, a large breeding colony of greater flamingos (Phoenicopterus roseus) uses the shallow mudflats; anchor well clear (minimum 200m) of any flamingo concentrations and make no noise or disturbance.
Zone 2: N lagoon near entrance channel — slightly deeper zone
- Depth: 2–4m
- Bottom: mud
- Holding: Excellent holding
- Protected from: N, NE, E, SE, S, SW, W, NW
- Recommended alarm radius: 70m
The N portion of the Laguna e Nartës near the connection channel in 2–4m over mud — slightly deeper than the S main anchorage and positioned closer to the entrance channel for quicker exit in settled weather. Excellent mud holding throughout. The same draft restriction applies: maximum 1.5m. The N position gives a slightly better view of the flamingo colony movements on the mudflats to the S and W (from a respectful distance). The mud bottom here is very soft — the anchor will bury completely with adequate scope; use a swivel to prevent chain tangling in the soft substrate. Alarm radius 70m reflects the slightly deeper zone and consequent longer scope; still well within the lagoon bounds.
Setting Your Anchor
The bottom at Narta Lagoon South is primarily sand and mud with reliable holding when properly set.
- Confirm your position relative to the military zone before anchoring near Vlorë — the Bay of Vlorë (W of the commercial port) and Sazan Island are strictly restricted. Stay E and S of the port approach.
- Approach in daylight only — unlit fish farm gear in the Vlorë bay approaches. Time arrivals at least 2 hours before sunset.
- Approach slowly and check your depth sounder. At 1–3m, deploy minimum 7:1 scope (21m chain at 3m depth).
- Set firmly in reverse — 30–60 seconds at moderate throttle. Use the scope calculator to confirm adequate chain.
Recommended anchor types: Rocna, Mantus, Spade.
Overnight Anchoring & Anchor Alarm
Overnight stays at Narta Lagoon South are excellent — all-round protection means minimal boat movement.
Set your GPS anchor alarm to 60m radius before going below.
Best May–September. The flamingo colony is present April–June and is the defining experience of this anchorage — approach with maximum respect and quiet during these months. July–August: the flamingos are usually present in reduced numbers after breeding season concludes; the lagoon is calm and the anchorage is rarely visited by other boats. September is excellent — warm water, settled conditions, and the lagoon transitions toward autumn bird populations (waders, wildfowl). October: viable but tidal range increases slightly and the lagoon entrance becomes more challenging; the flamingo colony has departed for winter grounds. Not suitable November–April.
Navigation Hazards
- Draft restriction — maximum 1.5m: the entrance channel and lagoon interior are severely shallow; boats drawing more than 1.5m will ground; the soft mud means grounding is not immediately dangerous but recovery requires kedging or tidal assistance and can be a lengthy process; this anchorage is strictly for shoal-draft boats only
- Flamingo breeding colony (April–June): the greater flamingo breeding colony on the mudflats is a sensitive protected habitat; disturbance to the breeding colony is harmful to nesting success and is a serious environmental offence; maintain 200m+ distance at all times and approach the anchorage position quietly at low engine speed
- Unmarked shallow mudflats: the lagoonal interior has extensive shallow mudflats adjacent to the navigable channels; departure from the marked channel by even small distances can result in grounding; use the echosounder continuously while manoeuvring inside the lagoon
- Tidal influence: the Adriatic microtidal range (20–40cm) affects the lagoon; at low water, depths already at the minimum can reduce further; check tidal state on entry and account for the tidal range when planning departure
- Limited exit in deteriorating conditions: the lagoon entrance channel cannot be transited safely in poor visibility or at night; if unexpected deterioration occurs while inside, the boat may need to remain until conditions improve — anchor securely and ensure sufficient provisions for an extended stay
Rules & Regulations
- MILITARY ZONE: Bay of Vlorë and Sazan Island — do NOT enter or anchor. Armed patrol vessels enforce this restriction.
- Albania entry — clearance agent mandatory: All foreign yachts must use a local clearance agent (~€100–150). VHF Ch 16/12 at Vlorë. Fly yellow Q flag on entry.
- Anchoring fee: Free to anchor inside the lagoon. No fee.
- Maximum stay: 2 days
- Restrictions: CRITICAL: Maximum draft 1.5m — do NOT attempt entry if draft exceeds 1.5m; grounding in the soft mud interior is very difficult to self-recover from. Flamingo breeding season April–June: anchor well clear (minimum 200m) of any flamingo concentrations; no noise, no approaching flamingo groups by dinghy; respect the breeding colony. Daylight approach only — the entrance channel markers are not lit. Follow the buoyed channel markers precisely; do not shortcut outside marked channel.

Skipper's Tips
- The flamingo experience at Narta Lagoon is one of the most memorable in the Mediterranean for sailors — a large pink flock feeding on the mudflats at sunrise, visible from the anchorage at respectful distance, is genuinely unforgettable; arrive in the late afternoon to settle in before the flamingos begin their dawn movements
- Time the entrance for mid-to-high tide — this gives maximum clearance over the entrance channel and the shallowest sections inside; the buoyed channel markers should be followed precisely and at very slow speed with a crew member on the bow watching the bottom
- A shoal-draft tender (inflatable dinghy, minimum motor or oars) allows exploration of the lagoon shallows — the shallow mudflats are fascinating ecosystems with herons, egrets, cormorants, and spoonbills in addition to the flamingos; keep the outboard tilted to avoid the mudflat areas
- Anchor in the sand/mud zone of the S lagoon rather than on pure mud — the sand/mud mix gives excellent holding without the risk of the anchor becoming deeply embedded in very soft pure mud, which can be difficult to retrieve with a standard anchor without a trip line
- This anchorage suits bilge-keel cruisers, centreboarders, or any design with less than 1.5m draft — if your boat qualifies, prioritise Narta Lagoon over the standard Orikum berth for at least one night; it is the most distinctive anchorage experience on the Albanian central coast
A note on this guide: Data has been researched from multiple sailing sources and is provided in good faith. Conditions — depth, holding, regulations — can change. Always check forecasts and current official charts before visiting. Use a GPS anchor alarm and never rely solely on a guide for navigational decisions.
