Best Anchorages near Vlorë & Central Albania
Albania's second sailing port — Vlorë is an official port of entry with VHF Ch 12 and Orikum Marina for dedicated yacht berths. These 7 verified anchorages cover the coast from the Karaburun Peninsula N tip to the Narta Lagoon, navigating around the Bay of Vlorë military zone and the Karaburun-Sazan MPA.
MILITARY ZONE — Bay of Vlorë & Sazan Island: Do NOT Enter
The Bay of Vlorë (the main bay W of Vlorë city) and Sazan Island (guarding the bay entrance) are strictly enforced military restricted zones. Do not anchor or transit through these areas. Armed patrol vessels are active. Foreign yachts should stay E and S of the commercial port approaches, using the outer anchorage, Orikum Marina, or Radhimë Beach south of the city. The Karaburun-Sazan MPA patrol also operates in this area — follow the charted MPA boundaries carefully.
About Vlorë & Central Coast
Orikum Marina — Recommended Base
Orikum Marina, 10km S of Vlorë on the inner bay, is the recommended mooring facility for foreign yachts visiting the Vlorë area. Berths with electricity and water (non-potable). The marina approach keeps boats clear of the military zone and the commercial port traffic. Call ahead on VHF Ch 12. The Vlorë clearance agent can arrange to meet you here. The marina is modest but functional — the safest and most convenient option for the Vlorë area.
Fish Farms — Daylight Approach Only
The approaches to Vlorë have fish farms with unlit gear scattered across the bay. All approaches to Vlorë, Orikum, and the outer bay must be made in daylight. Night entry is strongly discouraged and potentially dangerous. Plan your arrivals to reach Vlorë before 17:00 in summer. The fish farm positions are approximate on charts — watch for buoys and nets by sight.
Clearance at Vlorë
Vlorë is an official Albanian port of entry (year-round). VHF Ch 16 on approach, then Ch 12 for port operations. Clearance agent required (~€100–150). The agent meets boats at the outer anchorage or Orikum Marina. Paperwork: passports, registration, insurance, crew list. The port authority is organised and clearance typically takes 1–2 hours with an agent.
Narta Lagoon — Shoal-Draft Gem
The Nartë Lagoon S of Vlorë is one of the most unusual anchorages in Albania — a protected inland lagoon with flamingo colonies (April–June) and total shelter from wind and swell. Maximum draft 1.5m. The lagoon is a flamingo breeding site — maintain respectful distance from colony areas. A genuinely special overnight stop for shoal-draft boats that can access it.
Fish Farms — Daylight Entry Only Near Vlorë
Fish farms with unlit gear are scattered across the Vlorë Bay approaches. Do not enter or depart Vlorë, Orikum, or the outer bay at night. Time all arrivals for at least 2 hours before sunset. The fish farm buoy positions are approximate on charts and may have shifted — navigate by eye at reduced speed (5 knots) in the approach channels. Karaburun-Sazan MPA patrol vessels are active and will redirect vessels entering the MPA zone.
