Boat Maintenance

Most maintenance is not difficult — it is remembering when it was last done. These guides give the intervals by system and by season: laying the boat up and bringing it back, the annual and pre-trip checks, hull and bottom care, and what to log so next year's question has an answer.

Boat Maintenance: common questions

When should you winterise a boat?
Before the first hard frost where the boat is stored, which is not the same as the end of the season. But only one of the three ways a laid-up boat is damaged has anything to do with cold: water that freezes. Water that sits (diesel bug, mould, a flat battery) and water that gets in (blocked drains, a pooling cover) do their work at any temperature, so a boat wintering in Greece needs most of the same list.
What should a boat maintenance log record?
Date, engine hours, what was done, what was fitted (part numbers), what it cost and what was noticed. The last column is the valuable one — a slight weep at a hose clip written down in May is a diagnosis in September. Kept in an app or a notebook, the point is that it lives with the boat, not with whoever happened to do the job.
