Best Anchorages in Istria & the Kvarner Gulf
From the Venetian charm of Rovinj to the dramatic 12km Lim Fjord, the dolphin waters off Lošinj, and the medieval town of Rab. The Kvarner is where Croatia's most fearsome Bura blows — and where its most sheltered anchorages are found. These 9 verified anchorages cover depth, Bura exposure, and anchor alarm radius.
Kvarken Bura Warning — Most Dangerous in Croatia
The Bura (NE katabatic wind) is most severe in the Kvarner Gulf, accelerated by the Velebit mountains. Gusts can reach 60+ knots with 30 minutes warning — sometimes less. The Bura arrives as a dark cloud bank over the mountains. Brijuni National Park: No private boats in NP waters — access by ferry from Fažana only. Lošinj Dolphin Reserve: 3kt speed limit near dolphins; no swimming with dolphins.
