Limski Fjord Anchorage Guide
Also known as: Limska Draga, Lim Fjord, Lim Channel, Lim Bay
Limska Draga is a 12km drowned river valley — a geological rarity in the Adriatic, created when post-Ice Age sea-level rise flooded a karst river gorge. The fjord cuts deep into the Istrian interior between steeply wooded walls of ilex oak and Aleppo pine, completely sheltered from all significant wind. The bottom is mud and sand from millennia of river sediment — holding is exceptional. The fjord is famous for its oyster and mussel cultivation: the naturally nutrient-rich water from freshwater springs produces mussels and oysters of outstanding quality, served at the floating konoba restaurants along the banks. This is one of the most atmospheric and completely calm overnight anchorages in the northern Adriatic. The entrance from the Adriatic near Vrsar requires care — approach channel between shoals, follow HHI chart. Inner fjord is quiet, forested, beautiful.

Recommended Anchor Alarm Radius
70m is adequate for the fjord geometry — the narrow width limits swing to the fjord axis. The protected topography means overnight conditions are exceptionally still. Increase to 80m if anchoring in the deeper mid-section. Oyster lines: maintain clear distance from farm structures — anchor position must not swing into lines.
Set this in Safety Anchor Alarm — FreeAnchoring Zones
Limski Fjord has 2 distinct anchoring zones.
Zone 1: Inner fjord — sheltered overnight
- Depth: 4–12m
- Bottom: mud, sand
- Holding: Excellent holding
- Protected from: N, NE, NW, E, SE, S, W
- Alarm radius: 70m
The inner 4km of the fjord provides near-total protection from all wind directions. The steep wooded walls channel any wind down the fjord axis, eliminating cross-wind swell or chop. Mud and sand bottom throughout with excellent holding. Depths of 4–12m in the inner section; deepens to 30m+ at the fjord mouth near Vrsar. Oyster farm buoy lines occupy the central section — navigate around them carefully and do not anchor near the lines. The atmosphere is completely still and private even in summer.
Zone 2: Mid-fjord — alongside oyster operations
- Depth: 8–20m
- Bottom: mud
- Holding: Excellent holding
- Protected from: all directions
- Alarm radius: 80m
Mid-fjord deeper section; spectacular setting between wooded karst slopes. Mud holding is exceptional. Ensure clearance of at least 100m from oyster farm structures and buoy lines. A few konoba-restaurant boats operate floating facilities in season — some accept yachts alongside (payable, check in season). Very peaceful overnight.
Setting Your Anchor
Bottom at Limski Fjord: primarily mud and sand. Deploy 7:1 scope minimum (84m at 12m). In the Kvarner, always set extra scope for potential Bura.
Recommended anchor types: Rocna, Mantus, Spade, Delta, CQR.
Overnight Anchoring & Anchor Alarm
Set GPS anchor alarm to 70m radius.
May–October with peak activity July–August when the floating restaurants are at their busiest. The fjord is calm enough for overnight anchoring in virtually any forecast short of severe thunderstorms. Avoid Nov–April: facilities closed, exit to sea in winter conditions can be challenging.
Navigation Hazards
- Oyster and mussel farm buoy lines — navigate with care, especially in low light; chart the obstacles before dropping anchor
- Entrance channel from sea near Vrsar has shoals — approach strictly on HHI chart bearing; do not cut corners
- Deepwater in outer section (to 30m+) — ensure scope appropriate for depth; set anchor in 6–12m inner section
- Occasional thunderstorms funnel down the fjord axis — calm becomes sudden squall; always use GPS anchor alarm
- Limited exit options in strong Jugo as sea state builds at fjord entrance near Vrsar
Rules & Regulations
- Permit: No special permit
- Anchoring fee: Free to anchor in fjord waters outside private oyster farm zones

Skipper's Tips
- Reserve a table at the floating konoba restaurant for fresh oysters — this is one of the finest seafood experiences in Croatia; oysters harvested the same day
- The fjord is perfectly calm even when offshore conditions are uncomfortable — this is a prime weather refuge
- Approach the inner section in the morning before tour boats from Poreč and Rovinj arrive (they leave in the afternoon)
- A kayak or paddleboard explored up the fjord to its terminus reveals a pristine karst landscape accessible only by water
- Rovinj is 12nm south and Poreč is 8nm north — Limski makes a perfect lunch or overnight stop on a coastal passage
A note on this guide: Always check current weather, NAVTEX/VHF bulletins, and HHI charts. Use a GPS anchor alarm — never rely solely on a guide for navigational decisions.
Sleep peacefully at Limski Fjord
Safety Anchor Alarm monitors your GPS position and alerts you the moment your boat drifts — essential in the Kvarner where Bura arrives fast.
