How to Anchor a Boat: The Complete Step-by-Step Guide

Most anchoring guides tell you what to do. The problem is that every step of anchoring can look right and still have failed — the spot seems fine, the chain went out, the boat stopped. This guide treats anchoring as five checkpoints, and gives each one a pass/fail test, so you know your anchor is actually holding before you open a beer or close your eyes.

The 90-second answer

  1. Pick a spot sheltered from the forecast wind, over sand or firm mud, with room to swing.
  2. Work out your scope: total depth at high tide × 5 for a lunch stop, × 7 for overnight.
  3. Motor slowly head-to-wind to your spot and stop the boat.
  4. Lower the anchor to the bottom — never throw it.
  5. Pay out chain as the boat drifts back, so the chain lays in a line.
  6. Power-set: reverse gently for 30–60 seconds and confirm your GPS position holds.
  7. Rig a snubber, turn on the anchor light, set your anchor alarm.

Checkpoint 1: Choose the Spot

Nine out of ten anchoring problems are decided before the anchor touches the water. A well-chosen spot forgives an average set; a bad spot punishes a perfect one. Four things to check, in order:

Shelter — from tonight's wind, not this afternoon's

Look up the forecast and choose land, a headland, or a reef between you and where the wind will be coming from — including any shift expected overnight. Swell matters as much as wind: a bay that blocks the breeze but lets ocean swell curl in will still roll you out of your bunk.

Bottom type — the chart already told you

Charts mark the seabed: S for sand, M for mud, R for rock, Wd for weed. Sand and firm mud are what you want. Rock and thick weed are what you re-anchor to avoid. Depth — enough, but not too much

You need water under the keel at low tide, but every extra metre of depth costs you 5–7 metres of chain. For most cruising boats, 3–10 metres at low water is the sweet spot. Note the depth at high tide — that's the number your scope calculation uses.

Swinging room — draw the circle before you drop

Your boat will swing around the anchor in a circle whose radius is roughly your rode length plus your boat length. That circle must clear other boats, the shore, and anything on the chart. Boats on rope swing wider and faster than boats on chain; if the anchorage is crowded, read how far apart boats should anchor. And before you commit, make sure anchoring is actually allowed there — you can't anchor anywhere, and in the Mediterranean, seagrass protection zones carry real fines (the Med anchoring rules, country by country). Pass test: you could draw your swing circle on the chart and it touches nothing — no boat, no rock, no cable, no no-anchoring symbol.

Checkpoint 2: Calculate Scope Before You Drop

Scope is the ratio of rode you let out to the total depth — and "total depth" means water depth at high tide plus the height of your bow roller above the water. An anchor holds because the pull on it is horizontal; scope is what makes the pull horizontal. Too little scope lifts the shank and the anchor levers itself out of the bottom. It is the single most common cause of dragging.

Pass test: you know the number of metres you'll pay out before the anchor leaves the bow roller — not "a few boat lengths, that looks about right."

Checkpoint 3: Approach, Drop, and Lay the Chain

  1. Survey first. Motor slowly through the anchorage once. Note where other boats lie, which way they point, and where their anchors probably are (ahead of their bows, not under them).
  2. Approach head-to-wind (or head-to-current, whichever is stronger) to your chosen spot, and stop the boat completely.
  3. Lower — never throw. A thrown anchor lands in a tangle of chain on top of itself and can foul its own fluke. Lower it under control with the windlass or hand over hand until you feel it touch bottom.
  4. Pay out as you fall back. The wind will push the bow off and the boat will drift astern; if it doesn't, use a touch of reverse. Pay out chain steadily to match the drift, so it lays in a line along the bottom instead of piling on the anchor.
  5. Snub at your scope number — the one you calculated at Checkpoint 2 — and let the boat straighten the chain.

Pass test: the chain left the bow steadily and in sequence as the boat moved back. If it all rattled out in one spot, assume a pile, not a line — and assume the set that follows will be unreliable.

Checkpoint 4: Power-Set and Verify

This is the step most skipped and most important. An anchor lying on the bottom is not holding you; an anchor dug into the bottom is. Setting is how one becomes the other — and it's also your only chance to find out about a bad set while it's still daylight and you're still dressed.

  1. Let the boat settle until the chain has straightened and the bow points at the anchor.
  2. Reverse gently — idle astern — and watch the chain rise and tighten.
  3. Build to about half throttle astern and hold it for 30–60 seconds.
  4. Watch two references at once: your GPS position (chartplotter or phone) and a transit — two fixed objects on shore that line up. Both should stay put while the engine loads the anchor.

Chain that jerks and skips means the anchor is bouncing along the bottom. A boat that creeps slowly backward under steady reverse means it's ploughing. Either way: recover, move a boat length or two, and start again — re-setting takes ten minutes; dragging at night takes years off your life. Pass test: half throttle astern for a full minute, chain taut the whole time, GPS position and shore transit both motionless.

Checkpoint 5: Set Up the Watch

Everything so far happened in daylight with you at the helm. The last checkpoint covers the hours when you're not watching.

  • Rig a snubber — a few metres of stretchy nylon line taking the load off the windlass. It absorbs gust loads and silences the chain in the bow roller. A chain hook or a rolling hitch attaches it — not a bowline, which cannot grip chain.
  • Anchor light on, everything else off. COLREGS Rule 30: an all-round white light, dusk to dawn, at anchor. It's the law nearly everywhere, and it's how the ferry sees you — but only if your steaming light and sidelights are off, because those say you're under way.   • Set your anchor alarm with the anchor position — not your current position — as the centre, and a radius slightly larger than your swing circle.   • Leave the boat ready to move: engine key in reach, deck clear, torch by the bunk.

Pass test: if the boat moves in the night, you find out within seconds — from an alarm — not at 3 a.m. from the sound of your keel finding the bottom. Know the warning signs of a dragging anchor anyway; the alarm is the net, not a substitute for seamanship.

Special Situations

Staying overnight

Overnight anchoring adds its own routine — scope up to 7:1, weather re-check before bed, ventilation, and a proper watch plan. Anchoring with rope rode

Rope is light and stores easily but has no catenary weight, so the pull on the anchor goes horizontal later. Use at least a boat length of chain between anchor and rope, increase scope to 8–10:1, and expect the boat to sail around at anchor more than chain boats nearby — factor that into your swing circle.

Anchoring solo

Single-handed anchoring is choreography: everything above, but one person moving between helm and bow. The sequence changes — see anchor safety for solo sailors.

Two boats, one bay, no room

In tight Mediterranean bays you'll see boats anchored with a line ashore, or med-moored stern-to a quay with the anchor holding the bow. Both are their own techniques with their own failure modes — and both still start with a properly set anchor, exactly as above. Retrieving the Anchor

  1. Engine on first, then start recovering.
  2. Motor slowly toward the anchor as the chain comes in — the windlass hauls chain, it should never tow the boat. The full drill, including the handover to a chain stopper and snubber before you set, is in anchoring with a windlass.
  3. At vertical, pause. The boat's own buoyancy and momentum break the anchor out.
  4. Wash and stow. Mud in the chain locker is tomorrow's smell; an unsecured anchor is tomorrow's hull damage.

The Mistakes That Cause Almost All Dragging

  • Guessing scope instead of calculating it. "That looks like enough chain" is how 4:1 happens.
  • Measuring depth from the surface at low tide. Total depth = high-tide depth + bow roller height. Both omissions steal scope silently.
  • Dropping and hoping. No power-set means the first real test of your anchor is the first real gust.
  • Anchoring on weed because it was the prettiest spot. The anchor skates over it, and in much of the Med it's also illegal.
  • Centring the alarm on the boat instead of the anchor. Your boat swings; your anchor doesn't. An alarm centred on the boat either false-triggers or catches the drag late.
  • Trusting a perfect set forever. Wind shifts re-load the anchor from a new direction — a 90°+ shift can pull a well-set anchor straight out.

Anchoring is not one action but five checkpoints: spot, scope, lay, set, watch. Each has a concrete test, and each test takes less than a minute. Run all five and you've done more than most boats in the anchorage — including some that have crossed oceans.

Can you anchor a boat anywhere?
No. Anchoring is prohibited in marked channels, near underwater cables, in many seagrass (Posidonia) protection zones in the Mediterranean, and inside some marine parks and mooring fields. Outside restricted areas, you can generally anchor where it is safe and reasonable. Always check your chart for anchoring symbols and local restrictions before dropping.
