The Anchorage

Sandy bay south of the Portorož promenade hotel strip — a beach anchorage in 3–5m over clean sand with good holding. Protected from NW, N, and NE by the hotel buildings and the Portorož headland; fully open to S, SW, and W. Daytime and fair-weather use only. The beach is accessible by dinghy. Swimmers' buoys are set 50m from beach June–August — stay outside them. The promenade casinos and hotels provide an incongruous but practical backdrop. Tidal range 1m+: anchor in 4–5m at high tide. Jet ski area to the N of the beach. Not suitable for overnight except in the most settled high-pressure conditions.

Setting Your Anchor

The bottom at Portorož Promenade South is primarily sand with reliable holding when properly set.

  1. Call Marina Portorož on VHF Ch 17 to confirm berth availability before approaching — especially in July–August when the marina is at capacity.
  2. Approach from the NW. Entrance channel: 22m wide, 3.5m deep. Anchor in 35m, adding 1–1.5m to the charted depth for the Northern Adriatic tidal range.
  3. Deploy at least 5:1 scope (25m chain at 5m depth) — tidal movement means the rode will work harder than in the Mediterranean.
  4. Set firmly in reverse — 30–60 seconds at moderate throttle. Use the scope calculator to confirm adequate chain.

Recommended anchor types: Rocna, Mantus, Spade.

Overnight Anchoring & Anchor Alarm

Overnight stays at Portorož Promenade South are best in settled conditions — the anchorage is exposed to S and SW and W winds. The Northern Adriatic tidal range of 1m+ is the key consideration: your boat will swing through a wider arc than in most Mediterranean anchorages as the rode angle changes through the tidal cycle.

Set your GPS anchor alarm to 55m radius before going below. 55m in 3–4m depth. N. Adriatic tidal range means add 10–20m to your standard Mediterranean alarm setting. The open S/SW/W exposure means the boat will sheer significantly in any southerly swell — 55m covers full scope deployment.

Best May–September for fair-weather daytime stops and swimming visits. The beach is popular June–August and swimmers' buoys are set during this period. Best visited on calm mornings before the afternoon Maestral (NW sea breeze) picks up. September is ideal — beach quieter, water still warm, and the morning conditions reliably settled. Not suitable from October onwards.

Navigation Hazards

  • Open to S/SW swell — can deteriorate rapidly; no protection from the southern quadrant; daytime only except in settled anticyclonic conditions
  • Swimmers' buoys 50m from beach — anchor outside the designated swimming zone June–August
  • Jet ski area to the N of the beach — active water sports corridor
  • Tidal range 1m+ — anchor at 4–5m at high tide to maintain keel clearance at low water
  • Bora: no shelter; Marina Portorož is 0.4nm — leave immediately if Bora signs appear

Rules & Regulations

  • EU/Schengen — no customs formalities for EU boats arriving from EU ports. Non-EU citizens: register with police within 3 days. Non-EU flagged boats: 18-month temporary importation relief (TIR).
  • Anchoring fee: Free — public anchorage; no facilities
  • Restrictions: Daytime use primarily — overnight only in firmly settled anticyclonic conditions. Swimmers' buoys 50m from beach June–August — anchor outside them. Jet ski area to the N. Open to S/SW/W — vacate if swell develops.
  • Strunjan Nature Reserve: Central zone (Holy Cross Bay / Ronek) — navigation and anchoring prohibited (Natura 2000). Outer zone — navigation permitted, no anchoring. Verify position against official Slovenian charts.

A note on this guide: Data has been researched from multiple sailing sources and is provided in good faith. Conditions — depth, holding, regulations — can change. Always check forecasts and current official charts before visiting. Use a GPS anchor alarm and never rely solely on a guide for navigational decisions.

Sleep peacefully at Portorož Promenade South

Safety Anchor Alarm monitors your GPS position continuously and sounds a loud alarm the moment your boat drifts — essential in the Northern Adriatic where 1m+ tidal range creates wider swing arcs than Mediterranean sailors expect.
