Best Anchorages near Larnaca & East Coast
The preferred port of entry for Cyprus — Larnaca Marina is the only 24/7 customs facility on the island. Beyond the marina: Cape Greco's spectacular Natura 2000 MPA with mooring buoys, gin-clear Konnos Bay, and the quiet birdwatching anchorage at Potamos. These 7 verified locations cover every anchorage on the east coast.
About Larnaca & the East Coast
Larnaca — Only 24/7 Port of Entry
Larnaca Marina is Cyprus's sole 24/7 customs and immigration facility — the preferred arrival point for all non-EU boats and the most practical entry point for any yacht crossing from Israel, Lebanon, Egypt, or Turkey. 450 berths, 1.5–3m depth (shallow — confirm draft before arrival). Full services: fuel, water, power, restaurants, chandlery. Excellent winter base: 16°C January daytime, 6+ sunshine hours in December.
Cape Greco — Natura 2000 MPA
Cape Greco is Cyprus's most spectacular marine protected area — EU Natura 2000, protecting coralligenous reef communities, Posidonia meadows, and an extraordinary landscape of limestone sea caves. Anchoring is strictly prohibited in the core zone — use yellow mooring buoys provided by the Department of Fisheries. Fines €500+. The MPA has exceptional underwater visibility for diving and snorkelling.
Konnos Bay — Most Beautiful
Konnos Bay just north of Cape Greco is one of the most beautiful anchorages in Cyprus — a limestone cove with gin-clear turquoise water, excellent sand holding, and a Blue Flag beach. Protected from W/SW/S/SE (sheltered from the prevailing afternoon westerly). The best overnight anchorage on the east coast in settled conditions. A beach bar operates June–September.
Winter Base — Best in Eastern Med
Larnaca offers one of the finest winter sailing bases in the Eastern Mediterranean — 16°C average January daytime temperature, 6+ sunshine hours in December–January, gales infrequent compared to the Aegean. The marina operates 24/7 year-round. Short passages to Egypt, Israel (200nm), and the Greek islands are possible from this base.
Cape Greco Natura 2000 — Anchoring PROHIBITED, Use Buoys
Cape Greco is an EU Natura 2000 Marine Protected Area. Anchoring is strictly prohibited in the core zone to protect coralligenous reef communities and Posidonia meadows. Yellow mooring buoys are provided by the Department of Fisheries — use them (available May–Oct). Fines of €500+ apply for non-compliance and are actively enforced. Posidonia seagrass is EU-protected throughout all Cypriot waters — always snorkel to verify a sand patch before anchoring anywhere in the Larnaca–Cape Greco area.
