Potamos River Mouth (Potamos Limnatis) Anchorage Guide
Also known as: Potamos anchorage, Potamos Limnatis estuary, Potamos east coast
One of the most tranquil and least-visited anchorages in Cyprus — a quiet stop off the Potamos River mouth (Potamos Limnatis) east of Larnaca in 3–6m over sand and mud. The mangrove-fringed estuary is a haven for birdlife: herons, egrets, kingfishers, and spectacular flamingo flocks in winter. Protected from W and NW; exposed to E and NE. No facilities — provisions from Larnaca (8nm). Seldom visited by foreign yachts, it remains genuinely peaceful. An ideal choice for naturalists and sailors seeking solitude over services. The estuary landscape is unlike anywhere else on the Cyprus coast.

Anchorage off the mouth of the Potamos River (Potamos Limnatis) in 3–6m over sand and mud. Good holding throughout — the estuarine sediment provides reliable grip. Protected from W, NW, SW, and N by the hinterland topography and the slight shelter of the river mouth orientation; exposed to E and NE across the open coast. Mangrove-fringed estuary with exceptional birdlife — herons, egrets, kingfishers, and large flocks of flamingos during the winter season (November–February). Seldom visited by foreign yachts, making this one of the most tranquil anchorages in Cyprus. No marine facilities of any kind — completely self-sufficient required. Provisions from Larnaca (8nm, 3nm by road from nearest beach landing point). Tidal range <30cm negligible. 85m alarm radius for sand/mud anchorage with E/NE exposure.
Setting Your Anchor
The bottom at Potamos River Mouth (Potamos Limnatis) is primarily sand and mud with reliable holding when properly set.
- Verify Cape Greco MPA boundaries before anchoring — if within the Natura 2000 core zone, use the yellow mooring buoys provided. Anchoring is strictly prohibited in the MPA core area (€500+ fines).
- Check for Posidonia seagrass — snorkel to verify a sand patch before dropping anchor. EU-protected; fines apply for damage.
- Anchor in 3–6m. Cyprus tidal range is negligible (<30cm). Deploy 30m chain at 6m depth (5:1 scope).
- Set firmly in reverse — 30–60 seconds at moderate throttle. Use the scope calculator to confirm adequate chain.
Recommended anchor types: Rocna, Mantus, Spade, Delta.
Overnight Anchoring & Anchor Alarm
Overnight stays at Potamos River Mouth (Potamos Limnatis) are best in settled conditions — the anchorage is exposed to E and NE winds. The primary overnight hazard on the east coast is easterly swell from the open Levantine Basin (Lebanon/Israel direction) — develops rapidly in E/NE winds. Larnaca Marina provides the only guaranteed all-weather shelter on the east coast.
Set your GPS anchor alarm to 85m radius before going below. 85m radius in 4–5m sand/mud. Good holding in estuarine sediment. E/NE exposure — open coast; easterly swell possible. Completely self-sufficient — no facilities within 8nm by sea.
Best April–October. The birdwatching highlight is November–February (flamingos) — possible in calm weather but Larnaca Marina is a more comfortable base for winter periods. Spring (April–May) is ideal: estuary wetland vegetation is lush, migratory bird activity is high, and the anchorage is completely empty. Summer is comfortable in the prevailing westerly. October is excellent for naturalists with resident and migrating bird species present. Avoid in any forecast with easterly component.
Navigation Hazards
- E/NE exposure — open coastline; easterly swell rolls in from the Levantine Sea; leave for Larnaca Marina (8nm W) at first sign of easterly
- No facilities — completely self-sufficient required; carry all water, fuel, and provisions; nearest top-up 8nm by sea
- Shoaling possible near river mouth — approach from due W and anchor in charted depth; verify echosounder reading before anchoring
- Wetland environment — dinghy landing in estuary with care; respect nesting birds and estuarine vegetation
Rules & Regulations
- EU member (not Schengen) — 24/7 entry at Larnaca: Larnaca Marina is the ONLY 24/7 customs and immigration point in Cyprus. Non-EU boats arriving from non-EU ports must clear here first. Fly yellow Q flag. EES biometric for non-EU crew since October 2025.
- Anchoring fee: Free
- Restrictions: Fair-weather anchorage — E/NE exposure. Leave for Larnaca Marina (8nm W) if easterly develops. Dinghy landing in the estuary: respect wetland ecology; no disturbance to nesting birds. Check with Dept. of Environment for any seasonal access restrictions to the estuary.

Skipper's Tips
- Bring binoculars — birdwatching here is exceptional year-round; flamingos November–February in large flocks
- Completely uncrowded — you are likely to be the only yacht in the anchorage; genuine solitude on the Cyprus coast
- Dekeleia Bay (4nm W) and Larnaca Marina (8nm W) are the nearest alternatives if conditions deteriorate
- Best enjoyed as a day stop or one-night anchorage in settled W/NW conditions; not suited to extended stays without self-sufficiency planning
A note on this guide: Data has been researched from multiple sailing sources and is provided in good faith. Conditions — depth, holding, regulations — can change. Always check forecasts and current official charts before visiting. Use a GPS anchor alarm and never rely solely on a guide for navigational decisions.
