Akrotiri Bay Anchorage Guide

Also known as: Akrotiri anchorage, Episkopi Bay, Κόλπος Ακρωτηρίου

Akrotiri Bay is a large open bay offering good summer anchorage in northerly or settled conditions, in 4–10m over sand with reliable holding. Spectacular views towards the Limassol hills and Troodos Mountains (1,952m), with the Akrotiri Salt Lake behind the shore. Protected from N, NW, and NE; fully exposed to S, SW, and W — suitable only in settled conditions or with a stable north quadrant wind. CRITICAL: The Akrotiri Sovereign Base Area (SBA) boundary is to the SW — check the chart carefully and keep well clear of all marked restricted military zones at all times. Afternoon westerly 15–25kt is the norm in summer; arrive and anchor before midday.

The Anchorage

Large open bay in 4–10m over sand with good holding. Protected from N, NW, and NE; fully exposed to S, SW, and W — a good summer anchorage in northerly or settled conditions only. The bay is completely open to the south, and any southerly swell makes it immediately untenable. The afternoon westerly sea breeze 15–25kt is the dominant summer wind; in this bay it arrives without obstruction from the SW. CRITICAL: The Akrotiri Sovereign Base Area (SBA) boundary lies to the SW — stay well clear of all restricted military zones marked on the chart. The SBA is British military territory and enforcement is active. Keep east of the SBA boundary at all times. Anchor well clear of the shore to ensure your swinging circle does not approach the SBA boundary. Spectacular background view of the Limassol hills and Troodos Mountains (1,952m) above. Akrotiri Salt Lake is behind the shore. 110m alarm radius for large open bay and full S/SW/W exposure.

Setting Your Anchor

The bottom at Akrotiri Bay is primarily sand with reliable holding when properly set.

  1. Check for Posidonia seagrass before dropping the anchor — snorkel or use a waterproof camera to verify a sand patch. Posidonia is EU-protected; fines apply.
  2. Anchor in 410m. Cyprus tidal range is negligible (<30cm). Wind-driven sea level variation up to 0.5m possible in strong onshore conditions.
  3. Deploy at least 5:1 scope (50m chain at 10m depth). Set firmly in reverse — 30–60 seconds at moderate throttle.
  4. Use the scope calculator to confirm adequate chain.

Recommended anchor types: Rocna, Mantus, Spade.

Overnight Anchoring & Anchor Alarm

Overnight stays at Akrotiri Bay are best in settled conditions — the anchorage is exposed to S and SW and W winds. The primary overnight consideration on the south coast is the daily westerly sea breeze and the risk of southerly (Lodos) swell — vacate immediately at any S/SE forecast.

Set your GPS anchor alarm to 110m radius before going below. 110m radius in 5–7m sand. Good holding. CRITICAL: Stay clear of Akrotiri SBA restricted zone to the SW — check chart carefully. Fully exposed to S/SW/W — fair-weather/northerly conditions only.

Best April–October in settled or northerly conditions. The bay is particularly good in spring (April–May) when the northerly sea breeze is lighter and the Troodos Mountains behind are still snow-capped — a spectacular backdrop. Summer afternoons (June–September) see the westerly sea breeze strengthening rapidly; anchor before noon. October is good — the afternoon westerly weakens and the water remains warm. Not suitable for overnight stays when any S or SW wind is in the forecast; Limassol Marina (7nm E) is the nearest all-weather refuge.

Navigation Hazards

  • Akrotiri SBA restricted zones SW of anchorage — British military territory; do NOT enter restricted zones; enforcement active; check chart carefully for exact boundary
  • S, SW, and W exposure — fully open to southerlies and afternoon westerly; untenable in any S or SW swell; leave at first sign of southerly development
  • Summer afternoon westerly 15–25kt arrives without obstruction from SW — anchor and settle before noon
  • Posidonia present — anchor in confirmed sand patches only; snorkel inspection recommended before dropping hook

  • Restrictions: CRITICAL: Check chart for Akrotiri SBA boundary and restricted military zones — stay well clear at all times. Skipper's Tips

  1. Check your chart for the Akrotiri SBA boundary before anchoring — ensure your position and entire swinging circle are well clear of restricted zones

  3. Salt lake behind shore hosts flamingos October–March — binoculars worthwhile
  4. Good anchorage in N or NE winds — well-protected from the north; exposed to south
  5. 7nm from Limassol Marina — easy morning or afternoon run in either direction

A note on this guide: Data has been researched from multiple sailing sources and is provided in good faith. Conditions — depth, holding, regulations — can change. Always check forecasts and current official charts before visiting. Use a GPS anchor alarm and never rely solely on a guide for navigational decisions.
