The Anchorage

Open beach anchorage in 2–5m over clean sand off one of Cyprus's finest free beaches — an 8km stretch of flat sandy shoreline west of Limassol's commercial port. Excellent holding in flat sand throughout. Protected from N, NW, NE, and W; fully exposed to S and SE — the Lodos/southerly swell makes this anchorage untenable in any southerly conditions. In summer, a persistent afternoon westerly sea breeze builds 15–20kt after noon — expect a beam or quartering chop after 13:00. Anchor in 3–4m for good holding and a comfortable swim to shore; 2m is navigable for shallow-draft vessels but gives less swing room. The salt lake behind the beach (Akrotiri Salt Lake) hosts flamingo populations October–March. Completely free anchorage with no facilities ashore except seasonal beach bars. Akrotiri SBA boundary lies SW of this position — this anchorage is well clear of restricted military zones. 90m alarm radius for open beach exposure and afternoon westerly chop.

Setting Your Anchor

The bottom at Lady's Mile Beach is primarily sand with reliable holding when properly set.

1. Check for Posidonia seagrass before dropping the anchor — snorkel or use a waterproof camera to verify a sand patch. Posidonia is EU-protected; fines apply.
2. Anchor in 2–5m. Cyprus tidal range is negligible (<30cm). Wind-driven sea level variation up to 0.5m possible in strong onshore conditions.
3. Deploy at least 5:1 scope (25m chain at 5m depth). Set firmly in reverse — 30–60 seconds at moderate throttle.
4. Use the scope calculator to confirm adequate chain.

Recommended anchor types: Rocna, Mantus, Spade, Delta.

Overnight Anchoring & Anchor Alarm

Overnight stays at Lady's Mile Beach are best in settled conditions — the anchorage is exposed to S and SE winds. The primary overnight consideration on the south coast is the daily westerly sea breeze and the risk of southerly (Lodos) swell — vacate immediately at any S/SE forecast.

Set your GPS anchor alarm to 90m radius before going below. 90m radius in 3–4m clean sand. Excellent holding. Fully exposed to S and SE — untenable in southerly swell. Summer afternoon westerly 15–20kt after noon — expect increased scope tension and swing.

Best April–October in settled NW or N conditions. Avoid entirely when S or SE wind is in the forecast. Summer (June–August) is the most popular period — arrive early to choose your position before the beach fills with day visitors. October is excellent — warm water, fewer crowds, and the flamingos begin returning to the salt lake. Not suitable for overnight stays when any southerly wind is predicted.

Navigation Hazards

• S and SE exposure — fully exposed to southerly swell (Lodos); leave immediately if S or SE wind is forecast; conditions deteriorate rapidly
• Summer afternoon westerly sea breeze 15–20kt after noon — chop builds from W; plan activities accordingly
• Akrotiri SBA boundary to the SW — check chart and stay well clear of any marked restricted military zones
• Posidonia in deeper water — anchor in confirmed sand patches only; inspect bottom before dropping hook
• Commercial port approach traffic nearby to the NE — stay clear of shipping lanes

Rules & Regulations

• EU member (not Schengen): No customs for EU boats from EU ports. Non-EU boats: Limassol Marina is a port of entry (check hours); Larnaca Marina is the preferred 24/7 entry. Fly yellow Q flag. EES biometric for non-EU crew since October 2025.
• Anchoring fee: Free
• Restrictions: Avoid in any S or SE wind — fully exposed to southerly swell and untenable in Lodos conditions. Leave before southerly builds. Check chart for Akrotiri SBA restricted zones to the SW — stay well clear. Posidonia may be present in deeper sections — anchor in confirmed sand patches only.

Skipper's Tips

1. Arrive before 09:00 in summer to set the anchor before the afternoon westerly builds
2. Flamingos on Akrotiri Salt Lake October–March — binoculars worthwhile from the anchorage
3. Crystal-clear water over flat sand — excellent snorkelling and easy anchor inspection
4. One of the best day anchorages on the south coast for settled summer conditions
5. Carry all provisions from Limassol Marina — no services ashore except seasonal beach bars
